Franklin Sensors ProSensor 710+ 13-Sensor Stud Finder Wall Scanner

Used it to find ceiling joists behind plasterboard, haing failed with other devices. Success. Particularly liked the way lights showed the width of the joists, giving confidence about putting fixings into the centre of the joist. Worth the expense.

Bought two cheaper stud finders that both got returned as they simply did not identify the stud. This one works better but not perfect. Ok it is pricey but why pay half to a third the price for something that does not work. On a simple stud wall it is 100% reliable. My problem was that some walls have plywood reinforcement or foil backed/fronted insulation panels and results are less easy to interpret. That said I bought a TV wall mount from Sonos which came with a little magnetic stud finder (this finds the screws used to attach the plasterboard to the studs). To be honest it worked just as well probably better - you have to search around more to find the stud because you have to find the screws. But given that it was effectively free then it is difficult to justify spending £50 on a proper stud finder.

The most important piece of information is: it actually works. After struggling with some cheap product for a while I decided to take a hit, write-off the cheap one (couldn't return anymore), and decided to but this one. I'm happy. Detects studs like there is no tomorrow ;-)

The finder can do the job in most cases. However, the LED array indication is confusing, as when I move the finder's button detection surface in one direction, some LEDs become inconsistent.

Read/watched tons of reviews on this and it seemed to be the best choice for the money (although still quite expensive) only used it a handful of times but so far it has located the studs I was looking for behind the plasterboard. so far so good, easy to use.

Used once. Put away. Got out of box 2 years later won’t turn on. So irritating as literally had 2 years stored nicely and only used once. Really poor. And now it’s out of its warrenty

I bought a 710 from Sears (US holiday) many years ago. It worked well until I ran over it. The only differences between this one and my previous one seems to be a ruler and spirit level. No stud sensor is perfect, but having this multisensor detector gives you some confidence as to where the studs are. Move this detector across a stud and three LEDs follow the position of the stud (see picture). Even if you see a glitch on one LED it's still clear where it is. On a single sensor detector, all you see is the glitch. All the types work well in ideal conditions, but those conditions are rare in the real world. Before buying this replacement, I thought I'd try a magnet, which was time consuming but OK, until I came across an invisible stud (no screws or nails). The ape that put up the partition used Gripfill as the stud was undersized! This stud finder doesn't include a voltage or metal detector, but the separate voltage detector I use is more reliable than any combined unit I've tried.

Don't be fooled by those little $12 -$20 "stud finders" with the fancy displays and bells and whistles. They don't work. But this unit isn't like that. This is a more expensive, PROFESSIONAL QUALITY stud finder that works! Instead of a fancy display, this unit just has a row of LEDs that light up when they pass over a wall stud. Simple, effective, and from what I've seen, always correct. It's become one of my most-valued tools. No lie.
