Very pleased!
I have a number of cats and a number of litter boxes. I added this one to the mix with some trepidation. Some of mine have not liked covered boxes, and this one seems covered to the max. Plus years ago, when the top entry boxes first appeared on the market, they were very expensive, like around $75 if I remember correctly. I thought it ridiculous then as I would now. So at the time, I bought a storage box and cut a hole in the lid, figuring with litter inside it should do the same thing. But my cats wouldn't have anything to do with it. My creation was a total failure. I was skeptical of that kind of box ever since. But I saw this one at a good price (under $20) and thought I would give it a try. I'm really glad I did. Two of my cats took to it instantly and seem to love it! Maybe it's a kitty privacy thing. A third cat -- one whose almost 17 -- appears to be thinking it over, sitting on top and trying to decide if she wants to go in. I've only had it a couple of days now, and it can take cats awhile to adapt. And I still have other boxes for them to use. Anyway, I like the size. It seems roomy enough without being overwhelming in our small house. It's sturdy as well. I kind of wish the lid had a hinge to just swing it back without completely removing. It's really too small an entry hole to scoop the litter through, so I have to take the lid off. Not a real problem, but I'm just saying. The one possible drawback is that it is deep, so it requires some leaning over to clean. I'm short and have back issues, so that's a bit of a hurdle; however, the depth of it adds to the boxes ability to contain the sand. And besides pleasing your cats, that's pretty much the selling point of these: the sand does not get all over! I guess odors are somewhat contained as well. I have just ordered a second one of these for my daughter's room because the scattered litter is bothersome for her. So I do think this box is a good solution. I can't say for sure that every cat will like this box. It is different from what many are used to, and cats do not always like the same thing. A friend of mine loves those Breeze boxes, but my cats have never much liked that system. But for us this Petmate one is working out well. I would suggest leaving the kind of box they are used to in place during a switch over, just to make sure they are comfortable and there aren't accidents. It's better to have extra boxes with a multi-cat household anyway.

A winner
We have a 2 cat household. I've had the cat genie automatic cleaning one (a piece broke and it flooded my downstairs and the company repaired the damage and I believe now uses a metal fitting in lieu of the plastic one that broke on my unit). My cats were never super in love with it and they would always prefer to use a standard box instead. I've got the Nature's miracle automatic cleaning cat box currently which honestly is NOT worth the extra mess it tends to make. I've stopped using the automatic cleaning function completely and just scoop it like a regular cat box because litter always gets out around the collection container and my cats must pee more than other cats and they like to pee in the same corner of the box which means that after the first scoop or two, all the waste is piled up on one side in the collection container which prevents it from closing and so the odor can get pretty bad if I don't empty it multiple times a day. In need of a second litter box for the laundry room as one of my feline overlords has decided to occasionally guard the upstairs box, I purchased this praying that they would not be physically able to make the same kind of litter projectile mess that they manage with the other box. my prayers were answered. I saw previous reviews about the handles making it difficult to clean and can happily confirm that this no longer is an issue as those handles are gone now. It has a handy hook for holding the scooper right there on the outside of the box. I use a small hand boom to brush any litter that has collected on the lid and not fallen back down in the holes toward the holes before I open it to scoop it. And I literally am only having to sweep the laundry room once a week, that's how little litter is escaping this thing. When I got it, I immediately filled it up with high quality clumping litter and I introduced each cat to it individually by plopping them right inside it so they would know what it was. Then I put the lid on and walked away. To my delight, the next morning there was no puddle on the laundry room floor where my more timid cat had started resorting to urinating on when the jerk cat was guarding the upstairs box and there were three clumps of waste in the box. The cats still seem to prefer the upstairs box as that one always has more waste in it each day when I scoop it but I'm seriously considering purchasing a second one to replace that monstrosity of a box box that has the janky auto-scooping function that I stopped using. Even though that open box upstairs has pretty high sides, I have to sweep that bathroom daily and we still end up with some litter in the hall outside the bathroom that gets tracked out on kitty paws. Seriously, my cats can defy laws of physics with their litter-throwing shenanigans. The only reason I haven't already replaced it is that they still do seem to prefer the open top box upstairs since they clearly use that one first every day. So, if you're still reading.... Don't spend your money on super expensive self-cleaning boxes that your cats may not even want to use (sorry cat genie, i wanted to love you) or that make tons of noise and only do a so-so job of scooping the waste (sorry Nature's Miracle autoscooping box, I wanted to love you too). This is the box. It takes me less time to scoop this manually than it takes to clean up the mess the auto cleaning box makes trying to do it's thing and the amount of litter that hits the floor out of this box is miniscule. I only wish the manufacturer would make a ramp that attached to the outside of it for those with older cats that don't jump as well.

Sturdy, perfect size, and practical
UPDATE: My 2 Persians (one is 16lb the other is about 10lb) both use their new box. I have zero sand overflowing my bathroom (biggest reason I switched) and cats are having no problem using it. Highly recommend! Old review: Just received my new litter box; have not tried it with the cats yet, but so far, its exactly what I wanted. This will be my first top entry box, but anyone who has been heavily researching and seeing photos of the weird indent on the side that would inevitably be the bane of anyone's existence, I'm happy to report that the issue has been fixed and mine arrived with a completely flat bottom. The top is sturdy, but I've yet to figure out exactly how they engineered it to open. One side has little bracket type things that seem to have no relevance. The opening is large. My cat is large, 16lb, he will definitely fit, its almost half of the opening. I'm a bit bummed at how open it is (considering smell) but I'm sure with regular changes, it shouldn't be any issue. It fit snug under my cabinet sink, I had to really nudge it in for perfect fit, but it fit! (Insert happy dance here) Took the advice of someone on some review on some litter box (I went through 100s before settling on this one) about pam spraying the bottom and nothing should stick (olive oil rubbed in w/ napkin in my case) hopefully that helps, cuz my 2 cats are serious diggers. Only thing I didn't like is that the corners almost look like they've been broken off, not a huge deal since its under the sink anyways, but makes me wonder if there is supposed to be some brackets there that got broken off before shipping? Who knows. Maybe that reflects on the cheap price so the cut corners? (No pun intended) either way, lid works fine so I'm not too worried about it. Overall, I'M happy, now it comes down to whether or not my 2 Persians accept this new contraption. Will update on that!

Great litter box, easy to clean and significantly less litter tracking!
I've gone through lots of different kinds of cat litter boxes over the last 15 or so years - usually the jumbo or XL covered box with the little flap door (my cat hated that door so I eventually just removed it and then there was the time I used a plain pan within a cabinet as a hidden kind of litter box in my studio apartment. Both kinds there would always be a lot of litter that ended up outside of the box. I tried little cat carpet things to "minimize" this but it never helped. It also didn't help that my cat liked to kick litter up as she covered her business and like many mention it just flies out of the box. This open top cat box has been by far the best one I've bought! While it really doesn't eliminate the litter tracking outside on the floor it does significantly reduce the amount! I had the same issue with the lid as other reviewers mentioned - it doesn't snap in, however, I made it stay on by using binder clips. The clips also help to keep the plastic liner in place. Lots of people don't even bother with the liner but I feel like there's a risk with damage to the plastic from the acidity of the urine so I prefer using liners. Plus, my cat liked to scratch the walls and I heard scratches on plastic could hold bacteria and mold. Ive been using a heavy duty kind of liner and so far two weeks later it's still holding up! This was also very affordable and besides the lid attachment issue is pretty good quality compared to other brands that is twice or three times the cost of this one. My cat was a bit apprehensive about using it at first but I put her in it a couple of times and by the next day she was using it regularly. Oh it's also very, very easy to clean!! Since it's a straight box the litter doesn't cause a gigantic wet clump on the side and I no longer have to worry about any leaks from my cat when she urinates on the wall.

Female cat praying Problem Solved
My female kitty just started using this tall cat liter box a couple of days ago, but it has been amazing so far. With her regular litter box, she made a huge mess when she urinated. She had no concept of squatting to pee, so that she didn't spray everywhere. She just stood straight up and if I wasn't there to push her rear end down into the litter box, she sprayed all over wherever she was aiming and all over the floor. She would then proceed to throw litter all over the floor to cover up where she had peed. Every day, it was a horrible mess. Even if I put down puppy pads, she would scratch them and cover them with litter as well. It took her a day or two to go down the hole and into the box, but she caught on and even though she is a large kitty, she is not tall enough to spray over this tall litter box. It is so great. I haven't changed the litter or tried to clean it yet, but it has solved the spraying everywhere problem, which is what I purchased it for.

Time and Mess Saver!
This stopped the litter mess around the box from our 2-yr old male kitty. He liked it right away and it made life lots easier for us.

Works but could be better
To my surprise, my cats all use this. They love anything new, and now they are all going in this one litter box when there are 6 in the house. I have several cats. I bought this specifically to put in the back bedroom where I had a standard, open litterbox. The cats were kicking litter everywhere, so I wanted something to keep the litter contained but yet be somewhat compact, unlike my other boxes which I have designed like furniture. First and foremost, the dimensions of this are not as stated in the description. However, I see that there is no measurement now in the description. What I saw was "Item dimensions (length x width x height): 20.29 inches x 15.07 inches x 15.2 inches". The box narrows at the bottom and is not nearly as big as the dimensions state. See pic. This really concerned me because I have big cats, but based on the ability to stick their head out of the box while they're using it, I guess they don't need as much floor space as I thought. The reason I gave this three stars is because the lid is not securely fastened. None of my cats have knocked it off when jumping out like other reviewers say, but I can see how, if you have clumsy cats, they could knock it straight off when they jump out. The hinges are not snug at all. But even worse is that litter gets caught in the edges of the lid so when you open the lid to scoop the box, the litter falls to the floor. This is what I wanted to avoid to begin with. It's not a lot of litter and it is much better than my previous standard litter box....but still. The only way to avoid this is to unhinge the lid and dump those little granules back into the box. There are holes "close" to the edges, but that does not help with the litter that gets caught "in" the edges. I will be looking at other ones with a different lid design because of these issues, but I suspect this may be a problem with them all unless there is a slit in the corners. Hope this helps others. Still a very nice alternative to the standard box and definitely keeps the dogs out.

Happy with this one
Daughter and wife have 2 cats (jerks both of them -- the cats, I mean) and I'm the one stuck cleaning the litter box. We had a shallow box with side guards that resulted in a big mess and we used it for a couple years until I decided I wanted bigger sides. I didn't know such things existed. I really thought about just getting a storage container and cutting a hole in it. The trouble is, I visualized the hole at one end of container, not the top. I was pleased to see a variety of top entry litter boxes. I almost went for a more stylish one, but the size of this one got me. I was concerned about the lid's ability to survive both cats but it's been great so far. The box design is easy to clean, probably because mine came with a flat bottom. I understand some have some cavity for hands to hold onto it when cleaning it or moving it around which impedes scooping the box on a daily basis (daily, right, because cats stink!). I will say, though, the lid's hinge design could stand some improvement, as it's easy for it to disengage - almost daily - but, so far, it has not broken or weakened. Still, the high sides work great and there has been noticeably less mess, but there's still mess. The box does nothing to prevent litter getting into fur or between toes so there's always litter scattered in the vicinity of the box. The cats jump into the hole and out of it. They don't spend any time atop the lid where the litter can fall back into the box. They just jump right out without touching the lid so that aggravation hasn't been alleviated (told you they were jerks). So next, I'll be exploring litter alternatives because I'm not allowed to explore pet alternatives. Or maybe I can convert the unused playhouse in the back yard into a cat palace and let them poop in the wilds of the backyard along with the chickens (but that might result in the playhouse becoming my permanent "doghouse").

Best purchase I made this year!
This box has solved two major problems I was having. I have two cats and one dog. My male cat would sometimes aim his rear too close to edge of the litter box and would end up urinating outside the box. I noticed that sometimes he was standing while urinating so I knew I needed a box with high sides. I adopted my dog (Rat Terrier) last year and quickly discovered that she was a cat poop lover. I had to keep the cat box in the bath tub to solve these issues until this wonderful Petmate Top Entry Box arrived!!! Its a large box but luckily fits into my small bathroom. The cats figured out how to use the box from day one. I keep the box next to the toilet so they hop onto that to get on top of the box. I am very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend this box to anyone with dogs who troll for treats in the cat box. Its a nice looking box as well.
