Brilliant book. So well written. Concise and too the point with a heavy dose of the wonderful down to earth and honest advice from Nancy Birtwhistle's experiments and trials to make her daily living more environmentally friendly, cheaper and free from harmful chemicals. What is not to like and indeed love. I was curious to see what Nancy's books were like as I have been nagged by the voice in my head saying that we shouldn't need a chemical arsenal under our sinks to keep our homes clean. It seems terrible to own all these bottles of chemicals purporting to kill this organism or that fungus without wondering just how harmful they are to us. I also had the problem of never being able to get the toilet bowl clean - used whole bottles of bleach and "super powerful" branded toilet cleaners, which still didn't clean the darn thing. Then decided to try vinegar, and found it worked over night, descaling and removing brown water marks. Eureka! I have ditched all the chemical warfare brands, plus it was way cheaper. So having this experience I realise Nancy might have some more ideas and indeed she does. Loads of them. Her "Pure Magic" cleaner is indeed pure magic. I use it not only for the toilet, but it is brilliant for laundry. She has such good simple advice, from how to remove stains from laundry, whiten those whites, clean glass, plus many many others.. the list goes on. I have found the ingredients for her mixes easy to find. Most hardware stores keep them in stock and they are quite cheap. Her "Pure Magic" cleaner does only take moments to make up and I store it in an reused, cleaned out, glass vinegar bottle. I attached a label on the bottle with the recipe written on it, so it is easy to remake when the bottle becomes empty. This book is a "must have". I have given it as a gift for someone who has just moved house and to students who have moved away from home and are starting their own budgets and cleaning routines. It is easy to read and follow and good to have on the kitchen shelf for those, "how should I clean this" moments. I have downloaded 3 of her books now and look forward to delving into the others. Well done Nancy Birtwhistle - I hope many others follow your advice and we all make the effort to help our environment be less chemically over dosed and safer for all living things.
