The product description says that the center hole can be used as a belay plate. Is there a picture of how the rope should be run to do this?

I suggest you pick up a copy of Jeff Jepson's "The Tree Climber's Companion". It's covered in that book along with a lot of other useful climbing information. You can also do a search on YouTube to see its use in action.

I just received the Rescue 8. The finish is "crackled" not smooth like the picture. Won't this cause extra wear on the rope or serious damage?

Stop!!!! Your life is hanging off this unit ! The finish will likely wear off in time however I would not use anything that has any manufacturer or other defects
