Not a good experience
The SKEPPSHULT waffle maker was disappointing as it was smaller than described in the description, actually only 20cm wide, and much smaller and heavier than I had expected from the other 42.7 measurement given. The hinge feels fragile and potentially breakable as it's a pin rather than an interlocking hinge as other cast iron waffle irons use, and the arm feels too thin to be comfortable to use, as it feels unbalanced to pick up. I'm really unhappy with this product. I'm unhappy with the response I got from Customer Service as they failed to respond to my complaint until I had written 3 times.

Makes lovely crisp waffles
I'm a big fan of cast iron stuff, which is why I started looking for a traditional waffle iron instead of getting the new electric versions with nonstick plates. This piece is very nice, made in Sweden (hence the high price), it is incredibly heavy at 4kg, and takes 2 strong hands to use (my rather small girlfriend can't even lift it properly, let alone make a batch of waffles which requires lifting and flipping the iron). The outside of the iron is machined flat, which was a very smart move: you can use it on glass/ceramic cooktops and with induction, without any wobble. The inside however, and parts of the outside, are very rough. Fortunately, the roughness does not affect function much, just don't use paper towels to wipe it, you'll end up with shredded paper all over the iron.I made the horrible mistake of forgetting to oil it for the very first use. Needless to say, it was a mess. We had to wash and scrub the iron before being able to continue with the rest of the batch. For the first two batches, a bit of care and prying with a fork was needed to get waffles to come out whole, but by the third use the seasoning had built up quite well and, I only needed to add a bit of butter before the very first waffle, then no need to brush any more oil/butter in between waffles, just pop the waffle out, pour the batter in, repeat.I find that one half of the iron does not heat evenly, the middle is always darker than the edges, whereas the other half heats very nicely and the waffle on that side is perfectly browned all over. This is rather disappointing for such a pricey item, but I suppose that is one of the downsides of cast iron (uneven heating).I like the hinge design, the hinge itself is quite substantial, and the halves do not separate unlike most other traditional waffle irons. The hinge pin seems to be made of steel or some other smooth, malleable metal which is not cast iron, which is a smart decision (cast iron = brittle). This means there is no risk of the halves separating during use and spilling/dropping.The handles are very long, and quite thin, they look almost fragile, and I'm not sure what they're made from. They are not part of the iron, being inserted into holes in the body of the iron, and I don't think they're cast iron but can't be sure of that. One good thing about such long handles is they give you room to grip the iron securely. They also don't heat up too quickly which is a bonus. What cannot be forgiven though, is that mine had both the handles bent at an angle. That is just poor QC as it is blatantly obvious even to the most casual glance. Fortunately it doesn't affect handling much (certainly not enough for me to bother sending it back). Poor QC for an item at this price point - it is cast iron, and cast iron is cheap, this is absolutely not cheap - is just bad for the company's image, and despite loving the waffles that come from this waffle iron, I have doubts about whether I will purchase anything else from Skeppshult in the future. But I'm not reviewing QC, I'm reviewing the item itself, and bent handles, though damning of QC, only merit 1 star knocked off what is otherwise a near-perfect product.

Skeppshult - A waffle iron that doesn't leave teflon flakes in your food...
First the ugly. The packaging was LOUSY! The product was placed in an Amazon box with no packaging material whatsoever. When I received it, the box was broken, the handle was protruding from its side and it was slightly bent. I don’t know if any instructions came with the cooker. The only reason I accepted the package is because I was able to straighten the handle. Frankly, I don’t know why USPS accepted it in the first place. Zero points on shipping!!I’m not a big fan of the thin handles. Other than that, I think the waffle iron is very well constructed. The handles are long enough to keep my hands from the flames, they stay reasonably cool during use and they make it easy to flip the waffle when cooking. I still wish they were thicker though. The surfaces that meet the flames are machined flat, enabling one to use the iron on gas or an electric stove tops. The machining on these surfaces also causes the heat to be evenly dispersed, and the waffles come out golden brown all over. The pre-seasoning is nice; I was able to use the iron right away and got no sticking.I got this cast iron cooker so that I will never have to worry about getting Teflon chips in my food again. If you switch to cast iron though, I should point out the obvious. As with all cast iron products, if you get them wet, ie. wash them, they will rust unless you dry them and put a thin coating of oil on them immediately.Bottom line: I’m happy with this the Skeppshult waffle maker and I would recommend it to anyone. It works smoothly, cooks well and it’s compact and easy to store. Yes, it’s expensive, but you get what you pay for. I gave it 4 stars because of the thin handles.…Oh yeah; the hearts are cute too!10/19/2019I would be remiss if I didn't revisit this review...I have used this Skeppshult waffle maker a LOT since I bought it and it has been great! I raised my rating to 5 stars because the thin handles are actually not bad at all once you get used to them.I do have a recommendation for using it though. When you cook, flip it every 30 seconds. This ensures an even cooking temperature on both sides.

Satisfaction totale

Superior waffles if you do the work
This is a the ultimate way to make old fashioned waffles. Not for people who want a simple way to cook decent waffles in the fastest way. But if you’re willing to go the extra mile you’ll be rewarded. No Teflon or other compounds involved. Great crisp and flavorful waffles cooked in cast iron is the superior ways to go. The iron is heave and retains heat well, but is a bit heavy to handle. I slide it off center and lean weight on the grate when I flip it. You need to flip once for each waffles to maintain even ten on both sides. I use gas to cook and it works very well. I use 80 grams of batter to get a perfect waffle. Cooking on medium 3 min works with my 18,000 BTU burner. If you’re looking for the best possible end product, then stay away from non-stick and get this iron. After 5 uses it will be non stick anyway. Never use soap. Butter liberally the first few waffles the first couple of times you use it. Enjoy.
