Concerned
This is 1 of those "must have" films that needed a home in my dvd collection.I've seen the film and now I have the book - getting a copy of the dvd was my next move... brilliant!Though I bought this last year August '18, I watched it for the first time last night... it's great.Amendment: initially, I thought there was only half the film n was a little peeved that I wasn't able to send it back. It turns out that, the 2nd part of the film is on the reverse of the disc... however this information was not included in the packaging!

Rip off
I note that other people on here are also saying that only 1hr 15mins of the film are actuallyon the disk. This is a rip off and the people who sell these disks should be banned from selling onamazon.I too finally tried to watch the film several months after the purchase,so I can't send it back.

Half a dvd please ... Said no one ever!
I’m totally confused the dvd only contains half of the actual film it just stops dead before the ending, how can you sell a dvd with only half a film on it and that be ok ?! Complete disappointment and a rip off! It’s more annoying that you have watched half the film and can’t get to the end more do the money spent on it a complete waste of energy time and money.

The worst of family life in the American south.
I first saw this film some years ago. I was with a friend and it was her copy. One of her favourite films. She was mesmorised by it and shed several tears as we watched the story unfold. What a story it is. Set in the American south among farming folk. It is a story of many forms of domestic violence. Man's domination physically and mentally over women. Because of their superior size and strength. Life was very hard for them but this was not the way to cope with it. The film also shows many weaknesses and much humanity in some of the characters. It is very powerful and although there are glimmers of happiness and hope: for me, my emotions are totally involved in the compassion I feel for the heroine. It was Whoopi Goldberg's first film. She gives an extraordinarily complete performance for one so young. If it was made now it would be her name above the title. It is an epic and is still an important film. I find it very humbling.

Incomplete item
Since you ask, I rate this purchase as of zero worth. The packet contained a single disc, which played only 50% of the film and then terminated. I had to re-purchase and download from Sky films on television in order to complete the viewing - something in retrospect I should have done in the first place and most likely now will do in future.I have disposed of the disc from my collection as a valueless article, and not even worth the bother of complaint. For this reason I am not able to return it to you .

Not the book, but good all the same
When I chose this, I knew it wouldn't be the same as the book, but I was hoping it was closely followed. For me it wasn't, but the end result is a great, heart-warming film you should have in your collection. The book is fantastic and I think it should be read as well as watching the film, to fill in what I feel would be gaps in character. The good: Goldberg is a great Celie, and Sofia is billed perfectly. The end is a lovely scene with tears all around I should think. A softer Mr. ____ makes it easier to endear him since his actions were less callous and hurtful to his wife. From the book, though I knew Celie was young, she is mature, making me forget she is still a teenager for a long time; seeing it definitely helps you to feel more sympathy, being a wife at such a young age.The bad: The image of Shug I had in my head was rather different and Mr. ____ is for me, not cruel enough to truly show just how hard Celie's life has been. Celie's sexuality is by and large left alone, leaving a bit of a hole in her character, also making it seem she is close to Shug for no reason other than her kindness. I know, its not the book, but this is how I know the story and it fits together better with these pieces of information. But worth a watch and not to be shunned despite its detour away from the text. Watch just for the small victories Celie gets and relishes them, coy smile on her face.

New as advertised
Arrived promptly. Excellent film! Very emotional and very gritty at the beginning but well worth a watch. This has withstood the test of time, a film ahead if it's time with a mainly black cast. Brilliant acting, can't seem to go wrong with a Spielberg film!

DVD only had half the film on it.
I ordered this film back in 2019, only got round to watching it the other day, only to find that half the film is missing on the DVD, this makes me question as to whether this was a copy not an original film.
