What keeps it from blowing up from steam? Safety valve?

The lid of the water chamber is not sealed down, it simply lays shut, and lifts open easily, for adding more water, or scooping water out. On the side of the tank is a spigot you can use to dispense water safely. There is no vacuum, so no safety valve is necessary.

Does it come with stove pipes?

No. This is only a water tank that goes on the stove. This is not the stove itself.

How does it attach to the camp stove?

Below are some instructions to install the Alpine Hot Water Tank. -Install the spigot in the hole in the water tank. Insure you place one rubber washer on the outside of the water tank and one washer and the nut on the inside of the tank. -Before starting a fire in the stove attach the water tank to the stove by hanging it from the brackets on the side of the stove. -Fill the water tank with water. Always keep the water tank filled. A filled water tank prevents the washer on the spigot from melting and also warping the water tank. **Remember to remove the water tank when not being used and remove the tank at night when the water in the tank may evaporate and cause damage to the tank.

Can you use coal in it?

I do not believe that you can, you are not supposed to use processed fire logs because of the increased heat, so I believe coal would be in that category.
