I did stick welding in metal shop in high school in 1968 and I remember using a Lincoln welder - it was all set up for the students. I remember feeling confident making beads. I'm at square one getting an arc started with this unit but it really works and the leather gloves they included are great. I'm picking up scrap metal everywhere and practicing getting the arc started without sticking the rod to the metal. I think the trick is to not get shocked by seeing the sparks but want to see them start the arc. Today I was doing well starting the arc and making little domes. I have a Harbor Freight wire welder but it has A/C output to the wire so it spatters and isn't a lot of fun to use. This little welder is an inexpensive way to get started and fun. Using 3/32" 1708 rods.

For 70 bucks and just getting back into metal working I needed something to try out and figure out what I am doing and what is needed to make it better. There are a bunch of starter welding machine, but this one is cool because I can really start using it out of the box, you get everything you need minus the rods. There are different ones you can get and I would recommend getting the better rods especially for training and trying something new. I haven't done thins since high school 40 years ago and have some projects I want to tinker with, without dropping tons of cash. I have been practicing with this and working on my welds and have gotten good enough that I can move up to a different welding machine if I wanted to to accomplish some of the bigger projects I want to work on. I tried and got some good welds in on a trailer my friend asked me to do some work on and it came out great. For 70 bucks I definitely would get this again if not to just have around the house for small projects, very easily transportable.
