a must read
bought this as an accompaniment to the French text to check I had understood all of the main points, it was invaluable. this is a must read for anyone studying the text (english or french). A good lay out of each part, with an explanation of what has happened. At the end of every chapter there are quick answer questions which are good for making sure you understand the small details. Also supplied are longer essay questions which I didn't make use of but which I think would be good for those studying it in depth.

Great book
A very small and basic book. Semi-matte, high quality cover with thick pages. I bought this to revise with and I must say, for the price this is kind of a rip off for me! £10 for such a small and basic book seems a little pricey, but I have come to the conclusion that all university books seem to be. I think the font is okay, but I would have prefered something more simple and modern instead of just the bog standard Times New Roman style. The pages are thick, which makes them perfect for annotating, however as the book is small I feel a litle bothered that I have to write so tiny and carefully! The book is good, rather confusing, and not a read I would usually go for, but it's interesting once you get to grips with it!

Enjoyble
Very well acted, a real play on the scene, close to the author's text. Can only recommend it! Though I believe I had he last one available

Dull.
Bought this for my studies, and found it very difficult. I've given it 3 stars because I was using it to analyse and in that sense it's very useful, as there are lots of interpretations of the characters and (lack-of) events. It has very little plot and discussions between the two main characters have little comedic value as is intended, but instead seems very slapstick. Overall, I would definitely not read for pleasure. Another small gripe, this edition has no line numbers, which is difficult for referencing if you are using it to study from.

Fascinating parallel text
A most useful volume. The parallel text gives all sorts of interesting insights into Beckett's great and enigmatic play, particularly when the French and English texts differ in places and on details. The neat, hardback edition is also welcome, much more durable and not much more expensive than a flimsy paperback!

WAITING FOR GODOT
This TV production comes from 1961, and features Burgess Meredith and the great Zero Mostel. It was directed by Alan Scheider - who also directed the first ever production of Beckett's seminal work in the USA. That was something of a commercial and critical disaster: it opened at the Coconut Grove in Florida - where it had been advertised as the "the laugh hit of two continents" - and starred Burt Lahr, the "Cowardly Lion" from "The Wizard of Oz". The first night audience was clearly not expecting the sort of existential drama that Beckett had written - and many of them walked out during the performance. It was also comprehensively panned in press reviews. However, the production subsequently transferred to Broadway. It performed reasonably well there - but, by then, Schneider had been replaced as its director. The cast is different for this TV production, but this tape makes clear that Scheider had a deep appreciation and understanding of the piece - and how it should be played. His direction is seldom obtrusive, but never moves far from the heart of the drama, and there is a fluidity and assurance in his use of cameras which remains very impressive. Of course, Scheider was helped by a very strong cast - who not only display a high level of performance skill, but also show a convincing grasp of the play's underlying themes. This tape was recorded almost half-a-century ago, and there are inevitably a few technical glitches - but what comes across is the startlingly contemporary nature of both Beckett's work, and this production.
