Kidney Health Gourmet Diet Guide & Cookbook

Recipes are not very inspiring
I got this for my wife who has CKD. First I was underwhelmed with how small and thin it is, and generally looks like an amateurish effort designed to make some extra money on the side for someone. So to me it's not worth the price, and my wife also thought so.The front material about CKD in general is not so hard to find, so we didn't buy the book for that. The nephrologist sent her to a dietician who covered the basic dietary advice pretty well. If you were not so well informed then maybe this material is good reading. Then I started looking at the recipes. They seem kindof bland and boring, and there are no photos. I could probably cook most of those things without a recipe at all.I'm cooking several recipes out of this book regularly instead: The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Vegetarian Cookbook: 80 Delicious Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes Made Easy with the Glycemic Index which I highly recommend. Vegetarian, organic, low-GI food is great for everyone, and for CKD as well (you will have fewer toxins to eliminate). Some of the techniques, ingredients and flavors that book recommends are a bit more on the exotic side for typical Americans, so it will continue to be exciting for a few years I think. That makes it possible to survive on a vegetarian diet (at least partially) without missing your old habits so much. You just have to watch out for the known-bad vegetables (high in potassium or phosphorus), and protein if your CKD is advanced to the stage that you need to reduce it.

Kidney Health Gourmet
This book has been a Godsend to both myself and my husband. My husband has Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), and as a result has an extremely restricted diet. Not only is his diet low in sodium, but we're also avoiding potassium, phosphorus, and as many additives as possible. As a result, I'm doing almost all of our cooking and baking from scratch. Nina's guidelines and recipes have certainly been a huge help in wading through labeling information, advertising, and advice and misinformation from friends.Nina Kolbe (the author) is also my husband's nutritionist. We have been using her diet and book for a month now. My husband's blood pressure had dropped enough in that time that his doctor has taken him off of one of his BP medications. Since I've also been eating the same diet, I've lost 9 (much needed) pounds in the same time. Yes, the food is somewhat bland, but herbs, onions, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil add flavor and definitely make for a tastier and healthier diet for both of us.

How to eat with CKD, you just can't let your guard down.
This book has a lot of character. Most of the recipes don't have tons of ingredients, making them quick and easy to prepare. So many renal disease online recipes are far to involved. This Kidney Health ... book also gives; a list of beverages; some cheese comparisons; commercial soup ideas;and the lettuce review did surprise me. The book is loaded with other helpful ideas to help get a CKD person on the right road.If I could make one suggestion, recipe books should have spiral bindings especially when the book is out and being used frequently.M. Been waiting for this
I got the first version of this book and it was one of the first and most helpful items I purchased to deal with issues about early kidney disease. Dietary changes have been tricky, since many go contrary to what we have learned as healthy eating. Her charts and recipes got me started and showed me what to shop for at the store. Every so often, I look to see what else is being published to help with this journey and it's been one of the things on my wishlist, this updated version of the Nina Kolbe book. Not everything is new, but I think anyone who gets it will find it helpful, especially as a beginning book. If you have the original spiral bound and smaller version, and you have learned more since buying it, then maybe you don't need this. If you never buy another book for kidney diet, this is the best way to start.

not very good
it claims to be for kidney health, but a number of things in it are in exact opposite of what I am being told by doctors and others with PKD. and there are some very unhealthy for anyone items listed in it. I cannot respect her as an authority on the subject after going through the book.chocolate, tea and coffee are hard on the kidneys. only people without kidney disease should use any of those items. for that matter, it is said that Rosemary is also to hard on the kidneys.many of the recipes have large amounts of sodium in them. some of the recipes call for processed foods which are always excessively high in sodium. some recipes call for processed foods that have chemicals in them no-one should eat-fake whipped cream has plastics and solvents in them.recipes that should have the healthy (ie salt free, etc.) product in them, do not. butter is called for, not salt free butter. Splenda, a known ant killer, is called for instead of Stevia or cane sugar. cane sugar isn't good for diabetics, but my diabetic husband started losing weight he had not been able to lose when I took him off of Splenda and put him on Stevia.I wouldn't recommend this book. it is not condusive to staying off of dialysis, which is what I MUST do. off to find a far better cook book.I would have tagged this message but the tag system is not functioning.

Recipes Excellent
My husband has PKD and he just reached the stage where he needs to go on a low potassium diet. Although his diet has always been healthy by regular standards, he was heart broken to learn he would need to give up some of his favorite foods (e.g., tomatoes & sweet potatoes). This book has softened the blow considerably. So far we have tried the Pasta with fresh tomato sauce, the Chicken rogan josh, and the Singapore noodles with shrimp. All 3 recipes have been flavorful, interesting, and satisfying. The author writes the recipes in a clear, easy-to-follow style for the beginner to gourmet cook. One reviewer mentioned that the dessert recipes are a disappointment. Although I understand the criticism, I encourage everyone to try this book for the gems it does provide. There are also some notes about what frozen dinners are acceptable and what good choices are when eating out.

Unfortunately, this book didn't meet my particular requirements although it would probably meet other people's expectations. Uses American 'cup' measurements etc.

Reprint, not an updated version
The recipes are great. Unfortunately, the new cover suggested a new and/or updated version. There is no new information and no new recipes. The cover is different, the font is different but the content is identical to the 2010 version I had already purchased. I wasted my money!
