Märklin Trix 66602 H0 – Cleaning Brush

The Trix Lcomotive Wheel Cleaning brush does an excellent job. It is better than a fibre glass brush because there is no possibility of any of the removed dirt going anywhere near the motor or gears. There are no clips to attach to the track, simply place the tool on the track and away you go. Some people say it is expensive (£21.00 or so) but for me it is outstanding value for money. If you are looking for a quick, clean and effective wheel cleaner, buy this. You'll be delighted.

Easy to use, cleans the wheels like new, had some old trains running like new again

This is a simple device to clean powered loco wheels - it doesn't clean wheels that are not driven. It is placed on the track, the loco placed on top and power turned on. It works well, with the following caveats (hence 4 stars). It is quite small and will only, comfortably, fit an 0-6-0. That said, you can join several cleaners together for longer locos. Though the cost does start to add up and maybe other options become more cost effective. Also, unless you hold the loco being cleaned in place, there is nothing to stop it shooting off the cleaner, so try and place the cleaner on a piece of track (straight Track only) where you can hold the loco in place with one hand and move your controller with the other. Otherwise setting up a piece of track where cleaning can take place will be necessary.

Review: Märklin Trix 66602 Wheel Cleaner. Solid with limitations; hence only 3*. I was expecting this product to be at least the length of a standard HO/OO gauge locomotive and you'd think it would be. It isn't. Due to its compact size, you're only able to clean one wheelset at a time, which is a bit limiting and is the base to my 3-star rating. That said, the product is very well made. It has a reassuring weight to it, which prevents it from sliding out from under the locomotive during use, and it grips the service track reliably. It’s suitable for both HO and OO gauge locos, and does a good although not perfect job at cleaning the wheels. For more stubborn grime and adhesions, you’ll still need to get in there manually with cotton buds and isopropanol. While you're at it, it’s a good opportunity to inspect the axles with fine tweezers and remove any built-up fluff. Leaving that to accumulate risks it being pulled into the gear drive, which can cause binding leading to the stripping of gear teeth being the headache no modeller wants. A word of caution: take particular care with drive wheels fitted with rubber traction tyres. Replacing these and especially on steam models isn't always straightforward, as it requires removing all drive the linkages. This device, if not used gently, could very easily damage those traction tyres. In summary: The Märklin Trix 66602 although a very well made being a sturdy and a useful tool, its size and limitations mean it’s best used as part of a broader maintenance routine rather than a complete solution.
