Yes, they can. Also, rats can chew the plastic to allow a larger hole for rodents.

Box laid a week ago. There is a new burrow leading up to the box but they’ve not nibbled at the bait? Any tips?

I knew I had rats close to the house because I saw them take bread left for the birds. So I put a few v small bits of the same wholemeal bread near the entrance to entice them in. I also told the nearest neighbour I had a bait box and asked them not to leave food around. I also stopped putting scraps out for the birds. Best of luck.

Can you just put the sachets under a secure decked area away from children or pets?

The bate boxes are strongly recommended. They are designed to give access to kill only mice and rats. They can be easily accessed by the person with the key and topped up. And moved around and left at other locations safely. The bate can not be dragged off from a bate box. But could be from under the decking to where something ells could get at it, A child ,bird or hedge hog for instance. The latter could not get access via the bate box but could get to the bate if it were dragged from under the decking. I hope this helps, I have two in the back garden and two in the front garden. And feel safe about my young ones and pets being left to play there.

Can squirrels go into the boxes?

No. The hole is only large enough for rats and mice. I have squirrels and hedgehogs in my garden and they have never been affected.
