A few years ago we had to eradicate mice that had found their way into our garage by gnawing away at the base of the door jambs (we have a brush at the base of the door to stop them getting in, but they were evidently very keen!). We replaced the bottom of the jambs with new wood treated with Stockholm Tar, neither mice nor water should trouble them now. While we were killing off the ones that were still hiding in there we used traps that have a small trigger under the trap, and this made it very delicate to set them. Putting them down anything but extremely gently would set them off. Some of the swearing probably made a few mice leave in advance.These Roshield rat raps are a different beast, and they're quite a beast too. You wouldn't want a finger in there when they go off, especially if it's the finger you use to dial A&E.These have a clasp that holds the trap open, so setting one on the floor isn't half as fraught with this design. The clasp is still pretty touchy even so, because it has to open at the slightest rouch of a rat onto the pressure-sensitive plate. However it means you can have your fingers clear of the mechanism and set them in-situ if necessary. It still takes care and patience.Rats are "neophobic" - like most of us they don't like change. They're pretty intelligent too, which is why they're a successful species. It's important therefore to wait until they reach the point where their need for the goodies on your side of the fence outweighs their fear of the new, the point when one finally thinks "well, what could possibly go wrong?!" It also helps to try to arrange the traps so that they can't be avoided, such as by making them the only way through a barrier you have created - stuck in the middle of a floor they might not ever catch anything. Beside a house wall with a barrier of boards or bricks stacked fairly high your chances of results are a lot higher because you're channelling them onto the traps.They're comparatively easy to set, and they have a helluva whack, so you will generally get clean kills. If not, you may well have to get strong gloves or some tongs, and drop the rat and trap into a bucket of water. It's not a nice thing to have to do, but in rural settings with animal feeds around it is what stands between a moderate pest population and being overrun - which the history books tell us has always been a source of problems!For the ease of setting alone these are worth it.

…at trapping younger rats, less so with full grown adults.I expect this is more to do with the size & height of the trigger plate & the bait pot, which is part of the base plate - essentially a larger rat can reach further with their mouths without needing to step on the trigger, so depending on the bait used, may be able to bypass the trap entirely. They’re clever buggers after all.That can’t always be said about other wildlife, as we’ve managed to also catch a field mouse (which I wonder if the Rats & put him up to it?!) & 2 birds.The instructions are clear but limited, it’s worth doing some research online before deploying traps in anger, but I can include the cliff notes here:1) rats are afraid of new things, so deploy unbaited traps for a few days where they’ve been seen.2) it’s helpful if you can identify roughly where they’re coming from to (in our case under our decking & making a bee line for a bird feeder)3) remove the food source, while this won’t make traps more effective, it will make your area less attractive & they will move on.4) to prevent bird kills, placing the trap inside a box laid on its side can provide some visual cover, although this is obviously also a new thing (see point 1). I also can’t say if it’s effective or not.5) keep your pets indoors & away from rats, rat droppings, and the traps, obviously.Larger rats are more resilient to injury, and one of our traps has disappeared, possibly attached to its victim. Haven’t seen the adults for a day or two.In summary and to not waffle on too much, from what I’ve observed, while they don’t cause instant death, they do the job pretty quickly. I’llLet you be the judge of that being humane or not.Hope this helps, I don’t like killing things, but sometimes Karma has to take a back seat.

Arrived promptly and looks rhetorical part. Hasn’t caught the rat that I have seen but took care of a random mouse. My main concern is it fell apart during its dealings with the mouse.

Used along with the Roshield Bait Box as our visitors were outside the front of the house under the door crossover, starting to produce holes in the garden to get to water.Initially we used them on their own, not knowing what visitors we had... they were being triggered but no capture... however we continued to persist. It took just over a week of no capture to decide to box them up, and within 1 evening we caught 4 mice (obviously brought these traps assuming we had rats)! I must add we went through a combo of baits - Mars bars, Snickers, Peanut butter, nuts / seeds and chicken! They actually were drawn to the smell of chicken in our case.They are very strong and most certainly do the job. They are too big for some of the mice we have, as one managed to free itself and die on the doorstep; however I highly recommend these as long as you follow the instructions on where to place. They are very easy to use. Didn’t hurt too much when I accidentally set one off on myself 😂. Always allow the visitor to become accustomed to the new object and ensure the bait is well within the bait hole so they do not get a free meal. Would not hesitate to buy again.

I have a problem with rats in my shed. They’ve chewed and destroyed everything. I put an old and knackered squirrel trap in there and caught two. However, after seeing their compadres fate rats have enough intelligence to recognise danger and then avoided the traps. I thought that introducing a new device would solve the problem. Alas, no. They somehow trigger these traps without getting caught. And they now avoid these. I check each morning and they are still set and the bait untouched.Despite the number of good reviews I have to say I’ve found them totally useless which surprised me as they’re well made and very good quality. I wish I’d have saved my money.

These traps are unfit for purpose. Unsure why it’s described as wooden when it’s clearly plastic. It’s really difficult to get the trap to actually set. More often than not, it simply springs back. The largest issue, however, is that it doesn’t work at all. I have just watched a rat set the trap off and run away. Don’t waste your money 😞
