Will this work with the regular hi-lift jack or do I need the Xtreme? What is the difference between Xtreme and reg.?

1.  It will work with all versions of the Hi-Lift Jack.  2. Really, the part you are paying for is the steel parts that attach to the jack.  If you were to throw everything else out, you would still need these.  I can only see swapping these out with custom welding work.AS for everything else, I highly suggest replacement, but you need to BE CAREFUL.  I would suggest the following equivalents:-  Bow shackle:  I don't trust the one in this kit.  It is Chinese with a WLL of 3.75 ton.  Small trucks and jeeps should have at least 4.75 ton, larger trucks require more.  Also, a quality shackle will be properly rated, such as Crosby or VanBeest.- Strap:  looks sketchy, I replaced mine with a properly rated tree saver.  You want something with reinforced eyelets and clearly marked for the pull rating.  An easy solution would be an ARB product.-  Chain:  no problems here.  Grab hooks are also fine.  If you are not getting this product and venturing on your own, it needs to be 3/8" Transport 70 chain-bag:  original is total garbage.  Rips.  Replace it with a good tool bag. Will this system work with a 5/16 chain?

the kit does come with its own 3/8" chain but the hooks may be too big to fit in the loop of the 5/16" chain. Personally I would not use the 5/16" chain for vehicle recovery as it may not be rated for that weight. 3/8" Grade 70 would be the smallest/lowest rating I would personally go with unless the intended use is to recover ATV's.

Question 3

is it possible to get the tensioner and nose attachment items separately somewhere else since every seems to say that the rest of the kit is garbage?

I was not able to find them retail, perhaps you can watch for them on auction or local sales sites.  The bag, gloves, and shackle were garbage, but I had extra gloves and shackles and you need to buy 20-30' of chain in addition to this kit anyway, so while I'm not impressed with those items, I don't think it's a huge waste either.  I just expect more from the brand.

will this also work with a smitty built jack?

I think i should work with any hi lift jack , as far as i know the lift point and frames are all designed to be the same size.
