Nice tool roll for carving
These knives aren't really "top notch" and for the price, they shouldn't be. But the quality is adequate and the edges are well sharpened. If you're unsure what sort of carving you really want to do, this is a good variety to help you understand your needs and buy upgrades later if you want.In my case, most of my "carving" is done with routers and rotary tools, but sometimes I need the fine detail I could get from a simple hand tool, especially in my luthier hobby where sometimes I just need to take off a tiny bit here and there, or need to attain a certain shape that I don't have a template for. At times in the past, I have thought tools like this might come in handy for this or that project, and I think these will fulfill that need well. I might even carve the supplied spoon blank! (Something I'd also looked into trying in the past). The included roll will keep these nice and sharp, protect them from damage, and most importantly keep them all in one place!

Perfect Beginners Kit
I ordered this wood carving kit for myself. I am currently a weekend woodworker, but I have never dabbled in carving. I am expecting a new little one, so I figured this would be a great time to begin a quiet hobby. Unlike disappearing into the garage for long hours, wood carving allows you to sit on the back porch, and quietly use your hands.I was pleasantly surprised by this kit. All of the tools came nice and sharp. They all came wrapped inside of plastic. They come with a leather case with individual tool pockets that safely wrap the tools up. It also did come with a spoon blank, which did seem much too hard for a beginner. I opted to cut out a new blank for myself, using some basswood and my bandsaw. The tools were more than sufficiently sharp to then carve out the spoon. So far, I am loving my new hobby. This kit is great for any beginner, who just wants to try out wood whiddling. I'm sure that in the future I will want to upgrade to higher end tools, but for my knowledge level right now, these are perfect.

Decent starter kit
I got this for my boyfriend who is starting to get into wood carving. He said the knives are good and sharp. They seem decent quality. There is a variety of knives for different purposes, many that he didn't already have.My favorite part is that it can a be rolled into the case and tucked out of the way! These aren't expert quality knives, but they're good for someone just starting out. And the practice spoon was a helpful, albeit kind of ridiculous piece to start with. It's hard to mess up a spoon!

Seems good for a beginner
The knives were sharp enough for me to use, this kit doesn't have any sort of guides so you'll need to watch some youtube videos or get yourself a tutorial book, but aside from that this kit includes all of the knives you need to start whittling and then some and has a block that you can whittle into a spoon or some other small project.

Good for a beginner
This is a nice kit for someone who wants to try out wood carving. It is perfect for the beginner or to give as a gift. The kit comes in a very nice roll out leather pouch. The tools are good quality for the price and compare fairly well with my husband’s professional set. There is a nice range of tools, which work nicely for a large range of woodworking projects.I have one suggestion. Since this kit is designed for the beginner, a small pamphlet giving the purpose and use of each tool would be nice or even a link to a website with this information would be very helpful.I also have one complaint. The spoon that was included with the kit is made of a very difficult to carve wood. My husband struggled, even with his professional kit, to make any impression on the wood. This would discourage a novice. If your kit comes with one of these spoons, throw it away and replace it with a piece of pine or other softwood. I am deducting one star as I had to listen to my husband’s complaints and annoyance as he tried to carve the “brick” or spoon.I would like to add a few words about safety. If you plan to let a child use the kit, be aware that the tools are sharp and a child should be supervised when using the tools. In addition, I suggest that anyone using woodworking tools wear safety glasses. I do think it is great that this kit contains cut resistant gloves. On the whole, this is a nice kit and would be a great way to explore a new hobby.

Not sure I'd call this a beginner kit
When I think of beginner I would think of someone with interest but not much knowledge. Some of the included tools have specific uses and there's nothing included to tell you how to use these tools.I'm also not sure how safe they really are. The smooth varnish on the tools wooden handles male them a little bit slick. If I'm holding a sharp tool in my hand I don't want to risk it slipping. The blades all seem sharp and time will tell how sharp they stay. I like the leather tool roll that's included and it makes it feel much higher end.

Good Basic Kit
This is a nice kit with all the basic you'd need to start wood carving. It even comes with a blank spoon of beechwood so you can start carving right away. The tools are nicely sharp and are comfortable to hold. They only drawback is the leather pouch, it's super stiff and hard to put the tools into or take out, especially since the tools are sharp. I imagine with time the leather will break in and soften up a bit but they are like a new pair of army boots tough, so it will take a long time.
