the 1st catches the dust- it goes inside the 2nd. The 2nd has comes with hardware to mount it to you shop vac. Then to empty it, just pull bucket #1 out of # 2--very easy.

Q: Are the buckets worth the extra $50 over the DIY Dust Deputy that includes just the cyclone? Or can I just purchases a 5-gallon bucket at Lowes?

The buckets they supply with the deluxe are 100 Mil thick buckets specifically designed for dust collection. The manufacturer rates them for up to 150 CFM. They're definitely higher quality buckets than what you would find at Lowes or whatever (though those would still work - high CFM vacs might collapse the Lowes buckets though) The extra $50 also gets you some caster wheels, a foam mounting block & hardware, a really nice anti-static hose for connecting to the vac, an AS/SD elbow adapter, and the lid is already pre-cut. Overall it makes the install a lot simpler. I felt it was worth the added price but it's definitely a personal choice.

Q: I need to vacuum after demolition. Have to pick up blown insulation, drywall, plaster nails etc. Will this bucket hold these items or just dust?

The manufacturer says it works with almost any material, and I'm inclined to believe them after using the kit and watching other videos online. Drywall shouldn't be a problem, neither should the nails. Not too sure about the insulation, as that's pretty light and fibrous. But I've had it work well with pet hair up to a point. When the bucket starts to get 97.5%+ full the reeeally light stuff starts to make it past into the vac.

Yes, this will drop almost all the dust in the bucket. A small amount may go into the vac/filter. I have used this for sheetrock/joint compound sanding dust and it is very effective. When cutting plaster and sheetrock in a remodel my wife hold the vac hose near the blade and reduces the generated dust dramatically. I hope that answers your question.
