Fantastic resource for anyone who sets up data models in Tableau
For anyone that needs to do any data modeling in Tableau (and really that's pretty much anyone with a Tableau Creator License or who aspires to know which Tableau tool to use to best set up data for creating great analytical dashboards and visualizations), the new book from Kirk Munroe, "Data Modeling with Tableau: A practical guide to building data models using Tableau Prep and Tableau Desktop" is a must have.As a Tableau developer, I found the landscape for data modeling in Tableau to be somewhat confusing - especially given that some tasks are better suited to the desktop client and some are better done in Tableau Prep. Kirk explains all this very well in addition to teaching us how to best work with the rest of the Tableau architecture including virtual connections, best practices for publishing data to Tableau Cloud or Server and when and how to set up data models for natural language querying.I was originally hoping to get more insight into Tableau Prep Builder but quickly realized that's not the purpose of this book. It's to teach us how these tools work together to set up great data models and is an indispensable resource for all Tableau developers.#tableau #developer #datamodeling

A clear, concise guide to the 'Why' of Data Modelling in Tableau
There are so many options for connecting to, and modelling data in Tableau in can be tricky to choose the best approach. Most of the documentation and online help focuses on the What and How but lacks an explanation of why you would choose one option over another, or what is considered best practice. This book fills that gap really well. It has clear content on the differences between the options and some of the pros and cons of each. The sample files provided help test this out and get a feel for how these compare in a hands-on environment. For example, the discussion of different ways of filtering data (at extract, on the data source etc) I found particularly helpful. It helped me understand where some of the limitations are and how to adapt my planning. It's labelled a practical guide - as such it is concise and really clear. The author's experience is really clearly evident.

Covers all the basics quite well
It covers all the topics quite well without going into too much detail unfortunately. Virtual Connections doesn't get a thorough analysis and I was really hoping that when talking about relationships I hoped I'd get a better understanding of why the SQL generated (I'm using Snowflake) is often so bizarre and inefficient

Amazing Tableau Data Modeling Tips & Tricks.
Just finished ’Data Modeling with Tableau’ by the amazing Kirk Munroe and I’m thrilled by the massive loads of great insight in this book; perfect balance of being comprehensive and easy to follow along. Read it cover to cover, did all exercises & I’m impressed with the attention to details, although very easy to follow along. I recommend it to any aspiring Tableau Data Rockstar analysts out there.
