Can the canopy be left in a not fully opened position ... will the fabric be supported sufficiently? My porch is slightly less than 8'.

Yes. I keep mine about two feet open due to the wind in my backyard. So far I’m pleased with it. I think it’s good value for the money. We had it installed in about three hours.

how far apart do brackets go?

The instructions will show the distance between brackets

Can the hand crank be installed on either left or right side?

Only on left side if you stand in front of awning and look at the awning as shown on the picture.
