The Wartime Scrapbook: On the Home Front 1939-1945 (Scrapbook)

Bought this book after I had purchased the 1950's Scrapbook. My mum suffers with Alzheimer's and taking this book into the Nursing Home and using it to initiate conversation has been brilliant. Today she has enjoyed going through the book and the various topics. Looking at the sheet music covers, she began to sing the songs, identified many of the old film stars and after starting a couple of conversations on the topics, something that has not happened in a while, she said "I'll have another look at that book later this evening". These Scrapbooks are invaluable for people like my mum.

An excellent book and gift, much appreciated by its owner, crammed full of interesting, nostalgic material for people who lived through the Second World War. I wasn't around at that time, nevertheless the book, pictures, and advertisements are fascinating. I have the 1950s in the series, and also bought the 1930s as a gift, and they are equally a pleasure to read. I hope to have a full set of my own eventually.

Full of nostalgia, colourful and well written. Spent a good while reading it and looking at the images myself (done in a couple of hours). I then took this book (and some others i had bought by the same auther) to a dementia group and it opened up all sorts of discussions.

Wow!! large sized book but quite good really as the pictures were all of a good size and my 91 year old mother could see them easily and remembered many of the items and again helped to stimulate conversation. Sadly the text running through the items was written by someones own hand and she was unable to read it at all. Many of these books by Robert Opie are really good especially for people with dementia as the past is all they seem to relate to.

I still have to read this myself as others in the family pick it up and become engrossed in it. I've seen enough to know that it's a brilliant piece of memorabilia harvested by Opie.

This large book is absolutely jam packed with images of: leaflets, posters and product labels; along with lots of information. My one criticism would be that the font used for the authors explanatory notes is small and a little hard to read. Other than that, it’s proven to be a very acceptable gift to the 90year old it was given too.; lots of memories and anecdotes were prompted by the content.

Bought this for my grandads 89th birthday, he was absolutely thrilled with it, keeps mentioning how much he loves the book, he has Alzheimer’s but he loved looking at the pictures and reminiscing. I also bought him the 1950’s scrap book with he also loves. These books are good for him because he has bad eye sight and they are mostly photos and no small writing. Can’t recommend enough.
