Snow must die
Latest film in the Hunger Games series. Which adapts the second half of the final book of the trilogy. And brings the series to a close. This is not a jumping on point, so new viewers should start with 'The Hunger Games'. Either the dvd. Or the book. Or both.Picking up from the end to the last film, Katniss is still suffering the emotional fallout from the end of that. And wants revenge on Snow more than ever. She gets her chance. But as she takes part in an attack on the capital, just as the regime is starting to collapse, she has to find if Peeta can be trusted again. And Snow's regime won't go down without a fight. But what might happen when the dust settles and the fighting is done? This is as faithful to the book as you could want. The direction and cinematography are quite striking at times. In particular the architecture of the capital buildings. As a war movie, it can't be faulted. Showing the effects of combat on people and hard choices having to be made. Plus the after effects, and the question of what happens when war ends and what happens new regimes rise to replace fallen ones. But whilst a very good film, it's just not quite as engaging as the first two in the series. The pacing, perhaps by virtue of doing half a book in a whole movie, isn't the sharpest. And for a lot of it, Katniss and friends are reacting rather than acting. However it does allow her to be very solidly proactive in the end. And it does do the job of bringing everything to a complete conclusion very well.A very solid final film. Just not quite as good as the first two.The disc has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English.Subtitles: English. It begins with several trailers, which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote. In reviews of earlier dvds in this series, I was singing the praises of the dvd company for giving us two disc dvds with extras like they used to make. So it's a bit disappointing that this is a bare bones release with absolutely no extras at all.

Very disappointing.
Oh dear, we had such high hopes for this film. The first was imaginative and gripping, and the second, although not as good as the first, was certainly exciting enough, even if the plot was getting a bit strained. That said we were left in suspense and couldn't wait to see how Snow got his come-uppance. As I've already said, the plot was getting a little strained on the second installment, but we'd hoped that the finale would bring everything back together. Truth be told though, the strain only worsened even to the point of threatening to unravel completely. Added to that, for a great deal of the film, I was actually bored! On the positive side, there were a few moments that were exciting enough to drag me to the edge of my seat, but they were too few and far between for my liking. So to sum up, the film was over-long, over-thought, and tried too hard to be brooding and dark. Personally, I thought it only rated two stars, but my wife was adamant that it rated three, so three it got!

Absolute power corrupts which is why history keeps repeating itself.
This was the overt and covert message of the books and the films in the series. The final film was, without a doubt, the most powerful of the series and the bitter sweet ending was perfectly in keeping with the tone of the whole series. The twist in the tail just made it so much more gripping. The character of Katniss Everdeen, portrayed in a truly superb manner by Jennifer Lawrence, is one of the great action heroines in cinematic history and an outstanding role model for all young women.
