Colorful, Convenient, but Handle with Care
I’ve been doing a lot of traveling lately, bouncing back and forth between Florida and various work trips, and I’ve really been trying to slim down my carry-on. I used to lug around a whole tin of traditional colored pencils for sketching and color-coding my notes, but it just became too bulky. I picked up this Pilot Color Eno 8-color set because I wanted something compact that didn’t require a sharpener. Living in the humid Florida heat, I also liked the idea of a lead that wouldn't get "waxy" or soft like some traditional pencils do when it gets warm. To be honest, my expectations were pretty middle-of-the-road. I’ve used colored mechanical leads before, and they usually snap if you even look at them wrong. I was hoping these would be sturdy enough for actual writing and quick architectural layout sketches without me having to carry a graveyard of broken lead pieces. The Good Stuff: Color Variety: The eight colors are actually distinct. The soft blue and red are my favorites for under-drawings, and the violet is surprisingly deep and saturated. Erasability: This is where they really shine. They erase much cleaner than a standard colored pencil. It makes them great for "non-permanent" notes in my books. Portability: Having eight different colors in a slim profile is a game-changer for my travel bag. No shavings, no mess, and no sharpener taking up space. Comfort: The grips are classic Pilot—simple, rubberized, and comfortable for a decent sketching session. The Not-So-Good: Lead Fragility: Look, it’s 0.7mm color lead, so it’s never going to be as tough as standard HB graphite. If you have a heavy hand, you will break these. I had to learn to write with a much lighter touch. Consistency: Some colors are definitely better than others. The yellow is so light it's almost invisible on white paper, and the blue feels a bit scratchier compared to the smooth pink or orange. Saturation: If you’re looking to do a rich, professional-grade illustration, these aren't it. They are definitely more for "coloring in" or sketching than fine art. In terms of value for money, the set is a solid deal. You get eight individual pencil bodies, which is nice because you don't have to keep swapping out leads. If you run out of a specific color, you can just buy the refills rather than a whole new pencil. It's a very practical system for a student or anyone who does a lot of brainstorming and wants to stay organized without the clutter. I’ve mostly been using these for color-coding my calendar and doing light under-sketches before I go over them with ink. They’ve mostly met my expectations—they aren't indestructible, but for the convenience of having a full rainbow in my pocket while I'm at the airport or in a meeting, I can’t complain too much. Just don't expect them to replace a professional set of Prismacolors.

A variety of colors with the ability to erase.
I purchased these to have an erasable alternative to color pens and preferred mechanical pencils to those that require sharpening. This was one of the few if not the only one available. I located a couple of individual mechanical pencils with limited color options. This was the only set I could find with the most color options available. It's nice that they come in a set and at an acceptable price. If some reason one is lost or breaks I don't see an option to replace just one of the 8 pens. They are inexpensive enough to buy an entire set when comparing the price to buying an individual mechanical pencil that it may not be a big concern. If it is important that a set contain matching pencils then buying a new set appears to be the only option. Another option is to purchase individual mechanical pencils in a more customized fashion with barrel colors to match. From what I've determined the cost would be considerably more expensive to purchase 8 individual pencils rather than this 8 pack (depending on the brand and the quality of the pencil). As of this review I've had them a little less than two weeks and started using them immediately to see if they would be a good fit for my habit of use. The pencil itself is typical of mechanical pencil quality in my experience. There has been no experience of jamming. On occasion I can be heavy handed and like any other mechanical pencil lead it can break but haven't had too much breakage. If you're heavy handed on any mechanical pencil there will be breakage but again no more than any other mechanical pencils I've used. The .7 lead size seems to hold up better. I've typically gotten .5 lead for finer lines now I prefer the .7 over the .5. As some reviewers have stated some of the colors are lighter than others. The yellow is the lightest and the text is difficult to read much like a highlighter near the near of life is light. I tend to favor the yellow for use as an erasable highlighter if needed. Just color over the text to highlight. The green lead seems to be the next lightest in my opinion more readable than the yellow but still light. The blues, purple and red are the darkest. The orange and pink are readable lighter than the three previously mentioned colors and darker than the yellow. They do erase easily at least in my application. I use them for making notes/highlights in Bibles. Any of the colors will show up in contrast to white pages. Writing on any colored pages other than white would be difficult to read. The packaging of the pencil is a very thin plastic with a light tacky seal. The packaging doesn't have a snap or is the plastic thick enough use to store the pens. when I opened the box I noted the plastic is so thin the pencils easily move around in the packaging. There was no damage and packing was sufficient just a note if this was of importance to some. Before purchasing it was important to determine availability and cost of replacement lead. Local office stores do not appear to carry replacement leads in store or online. Amazon seemed to be the only seller (through various retailers) offering this lead and it is the "ENO" same as the pens. The cost can be somewhat expensive compared to purchasing the same amount of standard lead for any mechanical pencil. It is less expensive to purchase the 8 color replacement set. If a particular color is used more frequently then this may be the better option than buying the entire site. All in all I'm satisfied with this pencil set. The most important is to have multiple colors with the ability to erase any mistakes. Not sure how anything written will hold up over time (i.e. 1, 2, 10 years) but that will have to come with time. Each pencil comes with only 2 pieces of lead in each so depending on your usage you may want to order additional right away.

Erasers are horrendous. Pencils are good.
The colors are bright beautiful and vibrant. Grip, comfort, size are great. Plastic and fit is superior. The pencil mechanism works well and doesn’t jam. The erasers are 0 star. They erase nothing. Everything else is 4 or 5 stars. Plan on purchasing a separate eraser, white out tape, or never making a mistake.

Great for drawing and sketching!
I'm an artist and was looking for products that had colored lead and would also erase. These are beneficial if you want to draw a sketch and then use a pencil to clean that sketch up -- though most of the time I leave the end result I get with these pencils because I just love the way they look. The leads are incredibly smooth and glide easily across the paper with little to no drag. They are a little lighter in color than I expected, and if you bear down too hard on them, they break fairly easily. However, these minor issues don't really detract from my using them. The pencils themselves are very fine quality. At first I considered just buying the packages of lead and loading it into pencils I already own, and that certainly would work, however, I have appreciated having each color in its own pencil and at the ready when I need it. While I swapping colors in an existing pencil wouldn't be a total dealbreaker, these are much more convenient. My only real complaint is that there's about an inch worth of lead that can't be used once a piece runs out -- I'm not sure if it's the pencil or the lead or what it is, but for some reason the pencil won't grab the next piece of lead, even if what is left of the previous piece is not long enough to fit into the feeder. In most mechanical pencils, the pencil will grab the next piece and push the previous piece out enough to use it up, however that doesn't seem to be the case here for some reason. Again, not sure why this happens, and it is my only real complaint -- it still wouldn't stop me from using these pencils. Each pencil comes with a few pieces of lead only, so I would highly recommend going ahead and buying the eight-pack lead refills to go along with it when you order. While I use these pencils for art and highly recommend them for that purpose, I believe they would also serve other purposes well as well, though I cannot attest to that fact as I only use them for drawing. While they do erase, they also don't have the habit of smudging like graphite does, so if you needed to write something semi-permanently, they would be perfect in those applications. Overall, I highly recommend them!

Great mechanical colored pencils
These are so fun to have! They feel nice in my hands (I have arthritis), and the colors are vivid, and look just like sharpened colored pencils on paper. I am torn on how I feel about how they erase or don’t erase that well. On one hand come with an eraser, so you would think they would erase, but they don’t, at least not like a regular pencil. On the other hand, regular colored pencils don’t erase well, so it’s not that surprising. Just keep that in mind, and have realistic expectations. I have a heavy hand and they hold up just as well as any other 0.7mm mechanical pencil.

Overall..
I have wanted this set for years. Finally purchased. The package came open. The leads break a lot more than a traditional mechanical pencil. The replacement leads are sold separately. Overall disappointing performance. Color quality is fair. The durability of the casing is good, but again, the leads chip and break at the slightest of wrong angles. The value is something to consider, when they’re $15 for 8 pencils.

Love these- but know what you're buying.
I have to warn you, I am EXTREMELY picky about my art products. I bought these based on the reviews and I must say I'm not disappointed. I knew what to expect and they exceeded my expectations. The best: 1. Some of them draw on dark paper. Didn't know they did that when I bought them, was excited to find that out. (See attached photo, they're not perfect.) The good: 1. They're mechanical pencils. Always have a nice fine point. 2. Plastic is not too wide nor too narrow. The plastic grip is not annoying. 3. The lead doesn't slip and each click at the top provides a proper amount of lead. I didn't have any problems with breakage, but I'm used to using all sorts of art supplies and have a light touch. The neutral: 1. They didn't come in a carrying case. Only cellophane. Doesn't bother me, I don't keep anything in the original cases anyway. But, it usually bothers others. 2. Soft lead. Like expensive colored pencils. 3. Eraser is under a cap. I both like and don't like when companies do this. Because I'm too busy to take off the cap so I never use it. So, when it comes time to refill it's easy. But, I have to have my other erasers handy. Or lose the cap The bad: 1. Only has 2 leads in each pencil. Each lead runs out super fast. I've already bought refills. 2. First strokes tend to be overly light. Some additional pressure and layers required. This is normal of colored pencils so not entirely unexpected. Other notes: They erase well on dark paper with polymer erasers. Have yet to try on white. Would not recommend for drafting-the lead is too soft to use with a straightedge. Would not recommend for young children-the refills are too expensive.

The colors are a bit dull, but I understand it's not highly pigmented so ...
These arrived well package and undamaged. The colors are a bit dull, but I understand it's not highly pigmented so that erasing can be a thing and if you want something highly pigmented get some colored pencils because that's what they are for these are not. The leads blend nice with each other if you do it right. Good for drawing and doodling though if you're a bit on the heavy handed side I would recommend you avoid these cause the do break somewhat easily, but they're not so brittle to the point that the moment it touches the paper it falls apart like powder. These also seem to handle inking very well. And beware of yellow it's practically useless unless you go over some thing repeatedly or you are using paper that is other than white. Pink and red are almost the same, but you can still tell a difference. These are also very good for note taking. In conclusion I wouldn't recommend this to everyone, but despite that these are still wonderful to use and a great product.

Fantastiche
