D**N
A guide to the Kimono.
This book is easy to read and clear in its explanations. The illustrations and photographs are very good. I particularly liked the historical references. This is a quality made book. The patterns and sewing instructions are easy to follow, I have made four Yukata for the females of my family for Christmas and I look forward to trying out other garments from this book. The Kimono is a beautiful and elegant garment. With this book to help, it is my hope to make something really special. This book has been well worth the purchase.

Highly recommended
Highly recommended! Any one who wants to make their own Japanese clothes will be able to do so using this book. John Marshall clearly knows his stuff. Instructions, patterns and diagrams are comprehensive and very clear. Yes, the photos showing the made-up clothes are unmistakeably 80s as reviewer Mrs B pointed out but what does one expect from a 1980s book!! Excellent!

Interesting read, but tricky to make a pattern
My daughter is really into anime/cosplay and wanted an authentic kimono. So I bought this book.Does a great job of explaining the cultural differences, why Japanese clothes are made the way they are, etc .. (yes the photos are very dated!)As for how to make up a pattern? Oh my gosh .. tricky!First up, the garments are custom-made to your own body measurements, and there are different ones needed for men’s garments/women’s garments because the fits are very different. Second, you need to do a lot of working out in order to draw your own pattern to the right proportions (you will need gridded pattern paper to scale your sketches up).I’m an experienced amateur, I’ve used lots of western dressmaking patterns, and I got stuck at this point because I couldn’t understand how the garment pattern pieces are meant to work, especially round the neck. This is def not for beginners! So we are having a go at a kimono with a ready-made western pattern (by Simplicity) first, just to understand how the garment will work, then will come back and try making our own pattern from this book again.

Five Stars
A nice book, but some of the patterns are a bit intricate, and some steps are unneccesary

Great book. Wish I had it sooner in my diy attempts
Pictures a bit dated but very pleased at detail and explanations of clarity that no where else I ve found explained. Very pleased to own a copy.

Fun, fun
Fun, fun, fun. This is a down to earth book on pattern making. It is concise, informative and graphically detailed. The photographs in the center of the book date it, and the artwork is sometimes frivolous, but don't let those details distract you from the solid instruction the book offers. The clean straight forward tutelage is worth time it takes to read the book, absorb the techniques it illustrates, and create a solid foundation of Japanese design within the mind.Keep in mind this is NOT a pattern for Kimono, but a book that instills technique.

Servizio Amazon Impeccabile!
