Do you have to leave this in the meat? I thought that you just test meat when you take out of oven?

Hi - you can do either with this thermometer. It is oven proof so you can leave it in the meat whilst cooking but if you prefer, you can test the temperature once removed from oven/microwave.

Does it need a battery

No it doesn't. It works solely on the ambient temperature of the oven.

Can you use this thermometer in bbq?

I have never used it in a bbq but I've used it in the oven and it was okay .

Is the thermometer waterproof? Thank you.

It actually says on it "Do not immerse in water" but it is easy enough to keep clean with a wipe and dry. I actually found that someone had put my first one in the washing up bowl and tried drying it out in the oven. Bad move because the glass exploded as the water turned to steam. I regularly use mine when cooking meat and am very happy with my purchase.
