Q: Does anyone know whether this is too large to be used for fringes? Thanks.

This is a large roller brush. I use mine on my longer than shoulder length hair and it is perfect. I suspect that it might be took big for a fringe that comes to the eyebrows. I love this brush though, the ceramic element makes my hair dry faster and I am lost without it. It also stops any frizz.

Q: what size is the barrel of the 45mm

The circle at top of barrel is 45mm with bristles it is 70mm, length of barrel is 90mm of bristles and 120mm overall. The only thing I found was the top of barrel gets hot when using my hairdryer and I have caught it on my skin sometimes! But it is a fantastic brush and really gives good volume to my hair. I hope that this helps

Mine is as you described complete with orange pin that detaches

Q: Does the barrel get too hot?

Yes! Especially the end, it burned my neck and it only touched for a second.
