Been picking up Soviet stuff from this era with a view to collecting seriously in the future and after buying this book my interest has been renewed. I was determined not to splash out £60 plus that Amazon were asking and managed to buy a copy for a lot less from another dealer but I would strongly recommend that anyone with an interest in this subject to bite the bullet and grab a copy regardless of the price. Zammis Schein has done a sterling job in compiling this edition, with quality photos of his envious collection (though some of the matching descriptions of the items could be more precise) making this a worthy edition to the Schiffer militaria collecting library. Go on collectors, treat yourselves, you will not be disappointed.

The Ironies of Geopolitics… in a Soldier's Kit
Purely for specialists and aficionados, this book is a unique documentation of a time long gone, although freshly relevant due to our recent history. The ironies of this history are implicit on every page: we examine the Soviet war fighter's kit and reflect on its similarities (and differences) to our own soldier's uniforms and equipment… and then remember that Reagan called these men soldiers of the Evil Empire, and the muj he dubbed 'freedom fighters'. What a strange and amazing prelude to our own struggle against Islamic terrorism.

A must for Soviet militaria collectors!
As far as I know, as of today (March 2017) there are very few illustrated books on this subject of Soviet Uniforms and Mujahideen clothes and gear used during the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989 (basically a few booklets by Osprey publishing, which were published during the conflict with little information about what was happening on the ground, thus these books are a bit out of date and incomplete). This book is made by a collector, who spent quite some time in Afghanistan in recent years. He admits to not being an expert on the issue, yet is quite knowledgeable on the topic of both Russian uniforms and gear and Mujahideen clothes and Afghan culture. The book has more tan 300 pages of color photographs of ítems in his personal collection, with interesting captions and commentaries. My expectations were not very high but the book exceeded them by far. It is not perfect, and might include a few, very few minor mistakes, but is well worth the money, IMHO.
