Smooth, very smooth, but dark and strong enough. No bite, no smoky flavor.
At first, it took a bit to get used to. By the first couple of days, I started liking this. I like dark and strong coffee, no lie, seriously. So in this case, I found it to be a bit weak at first because it didn't have any bite to it. No smoky taste. just dark coffee. And strong enough BUT very smooth. No bite. No smoky taste, just strong. Hard to describe, but probably why so many people like it this way. I'll probably not buy again unless looking for a change, I will revert back to the smoky and/or biting flavors. I drink it dark, strong, and without any cream or sugar. So taste is important!

Best coffee, hands down!
Best french roast, whole bean coffee! I'm a little bit of a "coffee snob" (no shame!) and this is the BEST! Strong, bold, deeeelicious! For years now, this is the ONLY brand!

Good Coffee, Great Value
I've been purchasing a whole bean, dark roast from Kroger for the last 9 years, every once in a while switching to something different but always coming back to my main pick. Kroger however, has been negligent in stocking whole bean coffee, at a decent price in their stores consistently. I look for a nice oily bean, a good fresh coffee aroma and strong flavor. I've tried Kroger's own Premium, Private Selection brand, and got old stale coffee with lots of broken beans. I also did Sam's Club Makers Mark coffee with the same complaint, not oily, didn't taste or smell fresh. So I tried San Francisco Bay Coffee, whole bean, French Roast. It is Really good coffee. Maybe not the best I've ever had, (I've had some Costa Rican coffee while visiting Costa Rica that was to die for) but right up there, and the price is great giving it good value for the money. FYI: I use a French Press and store the coffee beans in a lidded glass jar.

Strong and delicious.
I've purchased this coffee at least twice before and it hasn't disappointed me yet. Love the taste and I buy whole bean so I can make freshly ground coffee. I'd highly recommended it.

Not Bad if Price Conscious, Far From Great
This purchase was motivated by price with expectations tempered by reviews. The good: well within the best-by date; not stale; no crazy off flavors. The not-so-good: over-roasted, I'd call this an oil slick roast; seriously lacking in depth of flavor. This a flat coffee, like no dimension, a kind of burnt flavor is the total flavor. Weird. I do find it drinkable, because I really like french roast, and I prefer a burnt roast to a light roast (call me a heathen, I can take it). My preference is for a textured, lightly acidic, dark roast. That's not this. If I didn't need to watch pennies I'd be disappointed, but for 50 cents an ounce and a dark roast that isn't stale or impossibly bitter I'm grateful.A lot of reviews mention the clear bag. Yeah, not a great idea, OTH, lotta brands out there sell bags with 25% bean chips (Amzn happy belly, you know who you are), maybe it makes sense? Anyway, I wash and save old coffee bags for situations like this, so I just transfered it to another bag.
