What is the current draw on this device, at say 12V max volume both channels?

The operating current changes as the music is played, and the volume has a big impact. The maximum is about 100mA

Sound files on this chip are triggered by connecting gnd to one of the #d holes. is it safe to leave this wire connected permanently for loop play?

The spec sheet doesn't say whether it is safe to do this or not. I would monitor the setup for a while to ensure there are no overheating problems.

Can this device be set in continuous playback mode. And how simply do you do that?

Yes. Set the device into IO Independent mode 0 or 1 using the red DIP switches. Load your mp3 or wav file onto a TF ( micro SD ) card and name it 1.mp3 or 1.wav. Insert the TF card, power up the device, and connect IO pin 0 to ground. File 1.mp3 or 1.wav will play until IO Pin 0 is removed from ground. If you set the device to Independent Mode 0, the device will continue playing the current song to the end of the file after releasing IO Pin 0 from ground. If you set the device to Independent Mode 1, it will stop playing immediately after the releasing IO Pin 0 from ground. Hold IO Pin 0 to ground for continuous playback of song "1". Google for the DY-HV20T manual for technical details. Good luck!

How so I wire a switch?

If you look on the amazon listing. It shows 8 switch connection points that you can individually connect to the ground connection to play 8 different sounds. They need to be saved and downloaded with the 8 proper names in order to work. Just a tip, to get good sound out you need to connect to computer speakers.
