The Guerrilla's Guide To The Baofeng Radio

I've taken his radio class and got this book expecting it to be a recap of that- it certainly overlaps with some class content, but this book appears to me to be a new written-from-the-ground up effort that builds on and then adds to what has been put out in his classes. (That is, it's even better than I expected) There's very useful and in-plain-English info specifically on the Baofeng UV5R and what all the buttons do, what all the menu choices are and mean, and that alone is worth the book's price. But there's much much more, including lists of various frequencies and uses, solid information you'd need to begin deciding which frequencies to use whether you have an FCC license, or don't. There's at least a chapter on setting up a communications plan. This also on it's own is more than worth the cost of the book. You can get some of this information from various FMs and military pubs, but just doing whatever military commo guys doesn't really make a lot of sense. This book explains the reasons why things are set up a certain way and you use the parts of it that make sense for what you're doing. i.e. if you're using the radios as car-to-car radios for a long trip in several vehicles, your needs will be different than if you're using them to coordinate several groups on a weekend hike. I'm going by memory on what's in the book and am mostly done with my first scan through the book, but it already has exceeded my expectations. If you want/expect to use handheld radios for communications, you really should get this book even if you already have an amateur radio license. A good find!

Excellent book for the Baofeng radios that is a must read book to master using the radio. It's well written and uses plain English and not a ton of technical terms. Easy to get through the book over a snowed in weekend when it's in the single digit and below freezing outside. If you have a Baofeng or are thinking about getting one you want this as well as if you are an old pro with the radios. I have my marine radio license back when I was working on the ocean running charters to running boats for a local salvage company and tow company but that was 30 years ago and it taught me about the advances in the tech as well as proper use of a land based handheld radio. I got the radios for the family to stay in contact out at the cabin where cell phone service is sketchy at best as well as in bad weather like blizards now that we live in the mountains and no longer at the beach. Lol but it was a very interesting read and I wish they had a book Luke this when I was getting my Marine radio license way back in the 1990s. It would have made things much easier and I would have known far more than I did from the class I had to take to get it and keep my 100 ton masters license valid. This book will cover everything you need to know for you to master the basics and then go for your entry into Ham radio license class and licensing test. That is necessary to operate a ham or cb radio other than for emergency use.

My dad recently got his ham radio license, and I got him this "Guerrilla's Guide to the Baofeng Radio" as a companion. Wow, what a fantastic resource! Even though he's a new ham, this book has already proven invaluable. It's clear, concise, and packed with practical information about using Baofeng radios, which can be a bit intimidating for beginners (and even some experienced hams). This isn't just a technical manual; it's a guide to using these radios effectively, especially in challenging situations. It covers everything from basic programming to advanced techniques, including setting up for emergencies and off-grid communications. The focus on practical application and real-world scenarios is what sets this book apart. For serious hams or anyone interested in emergency preparedness and off-grid communication, this book is a must-have. Communication is absolutely critical in a disaster, and knowing how to use your radio equipment effectively can be a lifesaver. This book empowers you with that knowledge. Highly recommended!

So here's the thing - these radios are popular with peppers, survivalists, civilian military congregant folks, and urban hobbiests. Full disclosure: I'm in one of those camps but not so deep I consider this a Bible or generally carry the associated dogma. So the info reads more intelluctally than the actual presented info (AI editing? Who knows...). It's a good compendium for the kinds of folk-learning someone would get during years of association with ham and communication gurus. That's a good thing because you get the stuff between-the-lines of academic study. It has a real value. That said, it's obviously regurgitated and collated knowledge and not TOO original. In fact, nothing here convinces me of the authors background. Again, don't let that take away from the value of this info, but honestly the author couldn't even be bothered with downloading any one of the billion existing templates for self-publishing through Amazon. If you question this, just look at the lack of top margin to tell you this was never edited for standard book format. Makes it a bit painful to read, but again, for the data and the audience it's probably good. So, if you're someone that's never going to read a field manual or study the subject for licensure or with other people who know what they're doing, it's solid and will be an absolute necessity in the library. Otherwise, it's a good purchase as a novel inclusion, and everyone who reads it will probably learn SOMETHING. I'm giving it 4-stars because for it's intended audience there will be above average value. But if you want to do it right, it will ultimately be a footnote in your research.

I didn't know much at all about radio communications when I first opened this book. I was a little disappointed and put off when I started reading it, expecting to learn some technical theory and how that can be applied to radio use in a potentially hostile environment. That wasn't what this book contained and that's a good thing. It starts as a PhD (Push here, Dummy) level of basic operation for one of the most common hand held radios. That turned out to be exactly what I needed. Each sentence and paragraph slowly walks you through what each control and menu item does, with lessons on OPSEC and COMSEC lightly sprinkled over each. Slowly and gently filling in each little square of the radio's operation and function, the book reveals a larger picture and begins to explore how to best use the radio's features and limitations. You'll find yourself moving from "What's this button do?" into the world of improvised antennas for various situations and developing communication plans. Whether your interest in this book is driven by providing comms for your family, your community, or other groups, you should start here.

Easy to understand Very informative. Good price free shipping

I had seen this book and passed it off as another book that like so many I've seen would be a waste. I never even read the description, I just figured it was all about baofengs (which I have several of). Then I got it recommended to me by someone who I really respect and decided maybe I should try it out. So glad I did, there is a ton of info in here that is presented in a non ham way that is not related to baofengs. Not annoyingly complicated, not too vague, just right to be perfectly digestible and useful. I knew most of what this book contained, but putting it together how it's presented for use here is something I'd have to be taught and likely have never thought about. Sometimes you just want to know the applications without a ton of theory. There's only a few short sections on the baofeng itself and the rest is about comms and can be applied to any radio and any band. I have my general and the only reason I have a license is to practice for when it may be necessary for this application. Important part of what this book teaches is learn it by heart and PRACTICE. All the theory in the world won't get you anywhere if you haven't put it to practice and sorted it out. Some questions I have had but wouldn't know who to ask are also answered in this book.

Very good read.

Quite an interesting book and seems to cover a lot of information regarding the baofeng. My only gripe would be it's a bit lite on radio basics and assumes a certain level of prior knowledge. It's not a deal breaker though. If you're interested in the baofeng and it's capabilities for whatever reason it's worth the money IMHO.

Beware this is not some ordinary manual on how to set up your Baofeng! If that's what you're looking for, this book is not for you. On the other hand, if you need to know how to use your radio in guerrilla warfare, riots or war, this is the BOOK. I see reviews here that reflect the frustration of not understanding this fact. On the other hand, I knew exactly what I wanted and that's what I got. Thank you, I would buy this great handbook again.
