A cost-effective way to improve the quality of your sound recordings
I recently wanted to purchase an external mic for my camera and spent a fair amount of time researching various options. I decided on this model for a couple of reasons. Firstly it is lightweight and small which is important for me as I sometimes mount my camera on a gimbal so need a mic with a low profile and ideally a low weight. This fits the bill on both accounts and doesn't cause any issues with snagging when fitted on a Sony ZV-E10 II mounted on a DJI RS 4 Mini The second reason is that Rode are one of the best-known manufacturers of microphones and have a reputation for quality. This model doesn't disappoint and gives excellent sound quality, noticeably better than the internal mic on the camera. Despite the light weight, the mic doesn't flop around as much as the previous version did - the design of the mount has been updated and this is an obvious improvement over the original. I also own the older version and the mic would flop down in use - this one is a lot more solid. The mic comes with a foam pop filter which is easy to fit, plus a furry "dead cat" filter. The mount fits to any camera hot shoe as well as a standard cold shoe mount on external brackets etc... The supplied cables give you the option to plug into both TRS and TRRS devices. Often the cables are a bit of an after-thought, however the ones supplied with this mic are perfect for on camera use, being short and very flexible. This particular mic isn't powered, so there's no need to fit a battery - this helps keep the size and weight down too. Overall, I've been very pleased with this - it's a great quality mic for the price and a good way to improve the sound quality of your videos without adding to the size and weight of your camera. It's easy to spend a fair bit more than this, but so far I've not felt that I'm missing out on any of the features of the more expensive mics.

Great budget mic
Nice size compact unit. Good sound and shock mount is nice. Looks professional. I only use it for wildlife sounds, so its good enough for this. If I was recording more critical audio such as interviews, I would use a much more high end mic costing 10 times the price. But its a good budget mic

Nice little package but disappointed with the volune
I video using an iPhone and wanted to produce a better sound quality than the built in mic achieves. I must say I’m a bit disappointed that whilst I guess it might produce better quality sound, the volume is really quiet and I’ve had to figure out ways to get it really close to my mouth and increase the volume in post production. I should say that this is primarily designed for use on a camera and I also use an extender cable to get it closer to my mouth.

RODE VideoMicro II: Compact Excellence in Shotgun Microphone Technology
The RODE VideoMicro II is considered one of the best small shotgun microphones you can buy in 2023. 🎥🎙️ As the successor to the popular RODE VideoMicro released in 2015, the new VideoMicro II has big shoes to fill, despite its small size. This compact Supercardioid on-camera shotgun microphone performs well for vlogging, interviewing, and voiceovers. SPECIFICATIONS: Brand: RODE Pattern: Supercardioid Audio Sensitivity: -30dBV (31.62 mV @ 94 dB SPL) ± 1 dB @ 1kHz Weight: 24g, 39g (With Mount) Frequency Bandwidth: 20Hz — 20kHz Dimensions: 80mm x 22mm Signal to Noise Ratio: 79 dB Analog Outputs: 3.5mm TRS PROS: Excellent audio quality indoors and outdoors 🎶🌞 Plug-and-play 🎧🔌 No batteries or controls ⚡🚫 Includes two windshields ☁️☁️ Compact and easy to pack 📦👌 CONS: No USB-C Output ❌🔌 Pricey 💸💰 With its windshield, it's closer in size to RODE VideoMic GO II 🌬️🔍

Good indoors but poor outside in windy conditions
I have used several Rode mics over the years and have been generally impressed with the sound quality. I bought a Rode VideoMicro (original model) a few years for my Panasonic X920 camcorder and, being very light and compact it is easy to use and copes with windy conditions quite well using the furry windshield. Reading reviews of the new VideoMicro II I decided to invest in one. It is also light and compact, has an improved mount design and a more directional sound pick up. I used it on my camcorder in the summer but delayed editing until recently. Indoor use was fine. However, outdoor footage was marred by low rumbling wind noise and distortion. I then tested VideoMicro II against the VideoMicro and found that the newer model is certainly much worse at handling wind noise. Using the Low Cut setting on my camera improves the situation and I have yet to test this fully on the two mics. Viewing a comparison test on YouTube confirmed my findings that the VideoMicro II does not handle wind noise at all well. I will in future use my original VideoMicro for outdoor situations and keep the VideoMicro II for indoors where the more directional pickup will hopefully prove its worth.

Not bad...
As a pro shooter I was looking for something smaller and more inline with professional shotgun microphones which basically just plug into your camera without all the software and infrequencer gimmickry. In general I usually use the Tascam DR-40X handheld recorder as my audio solution for my DSLR cameras. Even though it's mics are excellent and allows me to use my professional phantom power shotgun mics, it requires to be powered up and put in standby mode every time I start recording and needs to be reconfigured every time I want to use my phantom powered shotgun mics. The Rode Video Micro II shotgun mic eliminates these extra steps while also being lighter and much more compact, while still offering high quality acceptable audio. I am impressed with it's audio quality and when used with my Olympus OM1 its output level is ideal. It is very clean with a flat response curve without the booming bass I usually find with other mics in this price range. Another excellent feature is that it also includes a foam and dead cat wind screen. The dead cat is a must have for shooting outdoors. This micro condenser shotgun mic should be in every pro shooters kit. Plus it easy to use for family videos and casual shooting. This mic is now a fixture on all my DSLR cameras. Highly recommend.
