What should the consistency and colour look like in the can?

The consistency is runny like water. The colour is clear. It is, as far as I am aware, the only product to use to seal MDF before either painting or varnishing. So if MDF is what youv'e got then this is what you want. Go ahead and buy a pot. You won't be disappointed.

Is this product suitable for outside use, eg. a bird table made from MDF?

This product provides a treated MDF surface that is capable of receiving a gloss paint, varnish or other sealant that makes it waterproof.

As this is water based, does it cause the MDF to swell at all?

I coated my MDF quite liberally with multiple coats and didn't notice any swelling. It's very thin and dries pretty quickly.

If I stain my mdf would this be ok to put on top of stain ??

Yes, I've done this myself, just make sure the stain is perfectly dry.
