Can you use these sash brushes with gloss paint ?

Yes you can. They're ideal for all paint, water or oil based. Sharp edges every time.

Are they any good with oil based paint?

Generally synthetic bristle brushes are used for acrylic/water based paints. But I seen no reason why they could not be used for oil based paint, make sure the solvent used to clean the brush is compatible with synthetic bristles and does not melt them. Personally I use natural bristle brushes for intricate work with oil based paint especially brushes that are well worn to form a taper, hence the shape of a sash brush. Never use a brand new natural bristle brush for cutting in the bristle just push out, causing a messy line. Natural bristle hold more paint are softer and offer more control especially for traditional sign writing. Same as anything, brushes will last years when well looked after. Some of my brushes are still going strong after nearly forty years of use are well worn and perfect for cutting in.

Can these brushes be used for chalk paint?

These brushes could be used with chalk paint. I have used them for painting windows and picture rails where some precision is required. I was recommended them by a professional decorator who wouldn't use anything else
