Will 40 cover area of 4 burner bbq?

It depends how tightly packed you want them. 40 should be OK provided you don't want them very tightly packed. Sorry I can't be of more help. I had a 3-burner BBQ and preferred ceramic stones to lava rock. I now have a 3-burner with flovouriser bars so no need for either.

How big are each one?

5 cm by 5 cm. note that these are not square, slightly curved on two sides.Thickness, 2.5 cm at centre.
