Hyundai Standby Diesel Generator Electric Start, Single Phase, Long-Run Backup Generator, 25L Fuel Tank, AVR, ATS Compatible, 30hr Runtime, 70dB Quiet Operation

I purchased a Hyundai DHY8000SELR and cannot recommend it. There are several significant issues. 1. Poor technical support Getting meaningful answers from the supplier, Genpower Ltd, has been a tedious process. Questions were asked that I had already answered, while I had to request answers to my own questions more than once. Some questions were never answered. Overall, I found the technical support very disappointing. 2. Power quality and damage to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The Amazon listing states: "Designed with efficiency and user convenience in mind, this generator features an AVR-controlled alternator for producing clean, stable power that’s safe for sensitive electronics." An uninterruptible power supply (UPS), which had operated reliably for over a year, including several hours running from an inverter petrol generator, overheated and failed after approximately two hours on this Hyundai generator. I asked Genpower two technical questions about the generator's electrical output: * What maximum total harmonic distortion (THD) is specified for the AC output of the DHY8000SELR? * What are the specified limits for output voltage and frequency under varying loads? Neither question was initially answered. I subsequently asked Genpower to address my outstanding questions. I eventually received the following response concerning THD: "There is no published maximum THD specification from the factory for this specific model. However, because it uses a standard AVR-controlled alternator rather than a pure sine wave inverter, the THD is typically between 10% and 15% under linear loads, and can increase further when non-linear loads are applied. It is not designed to replicate the clean, <5% THD waveform of the mains supply or a pure sine wave inverter generator." I never received an answer concerning voltage regulation under varying loads, only at a fixed load. I was told "frequency typically fluctuates by about 1 to 2 Hz depending on the load step" I find the supplier's statement about THD difficult to reconcile with Amazon's claim that the generator produces clean, stable power suitable for sensitive electronics. The UK mains has a statutory limit on frequency of +/- 0.5 Hz. Although I cannot establish the precise electrical mechanism responsible for the UPS failure, the circumstances leave me with no doubt that the generator was responsible. Genpower has refused to replace my UPS, which Amazon currently sell for £134. I intend to raise this with Amazon. 3. Microwave oven would not operate A Panasonic microwave oven refused to operate from the generator, instead displaying an error code H97. This particular error can be associated with power supply problems. The microwave worked fine when used on the mains power, so unlike the UPS, was not damaged by the generator. This is another reason for questioning the suitability of the generator for domestic electrical equipment. 4. Excessive noise The Amazon listing states: "Silenced Generator for minimum disruption: Housed in silenced casing makes this a very quiet machine and won’t disturb you, your family or your employees when powering your building." My experience is very different. Even when positioned approximately 10 metres from the house, the noise is clearly noticeable indoors, despite double glazing. There is no sound-absorbing material whatsoever inside the enclosure, as far as I could see. It is essentially a steel cover around the machinery. Indeed, the instructions themselves advise using hearing protection. I consider the advertising claim that this is a "very quiet machine" highly misleading. An app on my mobile phone measures noise level. This is obviously not as accurate as a proper piece of test equipment. But the phone app did indicate about 70 dB (A) at 7 m, which is the specification for this, so I don't think I have a bad sample. Diesel generators with noise levels under 60 dB (A) at 7 m are available. A 10 dB difference will make a massive difference to how loud it sounds. 5. Important minimum-load requirements omitted from instructions Another issue emerged only through correspondence with Genpower. They stated: "While the AVR will output voltage at zero load, running the generator at very light loads (like your 30W internet setup) can cause the AVR to hunt, slightly destabilizing the waveform. More importantly, running a diesel engine on consistently low loads (under 25%) leads to bore glazing and carbon buildup (wet stacking) over time." In another email, when I mentioned a 600 W load, I was told "if you are running this machine only at 600 W, this will underload the machine and will cause internal issues in the long run" This is very important information for anyone intending to use the generator for emergency domestic power, where electrical demand may quite low at times. Having a minimum load of 25% (1450 W), means it may be desirable to run an electric fire just to prevent engine damage. I believe such limitations should be clearly explained in the instructions, rather than revealed only after a customer specifically enquires. Conclusion I purchased this generator expecting a dependable source of emergency electricity for domestic equipment. Instead, I've experienced a failed UPS which Genpower will not replace, a microwave oven that would not operate, excessive noise, and disappointing technical support. Most concerning is the discrepancy between the advertised suitability for sensitive electronics and the supplier's own explanation of the generator's power quality, together with their inability to provide a specification for voltage regulation under varying loads. On the basis of my experience, I cannot recommend it.

I'm a big fan of honda generators. Particularly the inverter series. However, needing something with a larger power output and longer runtime with diesel i looked at this model. It is now installed in a custom built shed and controlled by an ATS and so far works perfectly. Noise wise then yes if you stand next to it then its very noisy. 25+m away and its barely audible. Ok for me with large property but may annoy neighbors in for eg a terrice location.

Absolutely not fit for purpose. Noisey, lasted 3 months one single house build before bearings went on engine. Tried to blame not being serviced every 100 hours (2 weeks) after a lot of hassle they repaired it only to come back even noisier.

Nothing but problems a week after purchase, in a little over 12 months (thats how long you get a warrantee for!) it has stopped working 8 times, we have replaced 3 x AVRs, 2 x cooling fans and now the air filter has disintegrated and destroyed the engine and it only has 300 hours showing. Main UK dealer as much use as the air filter! My advice….. spend a bit more on something better and save money and hassle in the long run
