Complete Book of Chess: 1 (Usborne Chess Books)

Great book for helping kids get into chess. Lots of pictures, puzzles and helpful strategies. Would strongly recommend for beginners.

My 11 year old nephew loves this book, he is reading it all the time and showing us what he has learnt.

Great book, although it jumps quite quickly into the strategy of the game. Would have welcome more beginner knowledge first. Pages are well displayed with a lot of diagrams explaining the game of chess.

I got this for an old person who wanted to learn chess. It explains everything about the game and with the illustrations is easy to understand. It looks like a book for children but even experienced players will learn a lot from it. I would recommend the book to anyone and at the price it is a bargain. There are lots of links in the book to further information and lessons on the internet.

I have been playing chess for almost 40 years, but never read a chess book before. The book is really interesting and educational, and is an excellent starting point for anyone wanted to gain some further knowledge. I am teaching my 10 year old son to play chess and his game has improved so much since reading the book!

Having played chess for my school’s club for a few years, I’ve admittedly left the board alone for too long The Usbourne Guide is ostensibly for readers 12 and up, but it’s clear diagrams, full colour illustrations and carefully graduated lessons makes it ideal for beginners and improvers of all ages It also doesn’t shy away from more advanced concepts, such as the Sicilian Defense, and the Caro-Kann. I especially liked the little chess challenges it sets at regular intervals, as well as gentle reminders of what you’ve already learned to augment the new material. Likewise, unlike other books, I’m not given the basics then forced to solve endgames by the likes of Polgar, Fischer and Kasparov right off the bat Thanks to this book I’m playing, and enjoying, chess at a club level again!

Nice book and lots of information, however my 75 year old Mum who is still very much on the ball and active found the content overwhelming. She is a beginner who has always wanted to play chess and having read other reviews, I thought this book would be ideal for her. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. I honestly think a children's beginners chess would have been more suitable.

Bought this as a birthday present to go with my 11 year old Son's first proper chess board and he says it's great and it has learned him some new tactics. Unfortunately he's not a big reader but he couldn't put this down for days after getting it. Very pleased.
