is this 30cm high or 40cm high?

The question refers to the Jumbo size box, which is 50cm across the front, 40cm deep on the side and 30cm tall. The dimensiosn refer to the box itself, and the hems may add a few millimetres, so we recommend leaving a centimetre or so clearance on each side if you wish to fit them into a space.

Would this be big enough to store handbags and bags

Definitely! My daughter stores these, shoes , clothing, books, professional make up cases (large ones) and all her stuff! We have 6 which sit on a wide shelf which stretches over her bed, between two wardrobes, and it creates a huge storage area in what was a totally dead space, and gives a "fitted" look to the room without the expense.

Are they a dark navy?

I wouldn’t say dark navy. The colour in the picture is quite accurate

can the box lids be removed even if it means cutting them off?

Yes. There is only fabric connecting the box and the lid. You will have to tape it or stitch or staple it,
