I got no instructions whatsoever with this order. Am I supposed to put them in water and let them produce roots before planting them?

These fantastic trees! I have purchased several of these very easy now I got the hang of it! You could put them in water to get started then put in dirt. You can also put in sandy dirt ! I have done both they should start growing in about a week. I have done both ways. I have a little over a acre and always planting. Let me know how it goes Happy planting!

How close can they be planted to each other?

Stagger them 10 to 12 inches apart On a property line keep back 12 inches so when they do grow they are getting enough of sunlight. They grow very well after they take hold an set root. You will enjoy the privacy they will give.

There are no deer in the area that I live, however according to Arbor Day experts poplar leaves do get consumed by elk and deer when the trees are young. I suggest you enclose the tree saplings until it reaches maturity.

Do these spread like crazy?

They do not spread at all one seed =one tree
