RYA Competent Crew Skills

I read this book while preparing to do two of the most basic RYA courses – Level 1 and Level 2 Sailing – on successive weekends. It covers all the key skills needed to get started in sailing, whether you’re on a dinghy or a super yacht. It has clear descriptions of sailing manoeuvres like tacking and gybing, good illustrations and explanations of sailing jargon. I will read it again when I book the competent crew course.

I’m new to sailing and after looking at and reading 2 other similar books, I find this to be the best one for me. Excellent - clearly explained and well illustrated content. Not too much detail for me but others disagree. Just the right physical book size. Entirely relevant content with level of detail for the RYA competent crew course.

As described, compact in size and easy to read with lots of pictures for ease of reference. I listened to the audio version along side the handbook adding further to the learning experience.

Well sectioned but knots difficult to understand which part of rope goes under or over for example sketches are too small. Suggest get separate knot book or download videos to back up

Useful for the basics. I give it to inexperienced crew to educate them and use it for revision.

Purchased a week before going on the RYA Competent Crew Course and scanned through. Recommend reading through it in preparation so you maximise the learning opportunity while attending the course.

Great as an overview but you can get that from the RYA site. I struggle to see what you can get from this book that you could not get from a generals search of the internet. Save the money and put it towards the course and really learn to sail

Excellent, just what I wanted

Sehr gut und übersichtlich erklärt. Buch ist in englischer Sprache, doch durch die vielen Abbildungen ist es leicht verständlich. Für Anfänger geeignet um einen Überblick zu bekommen. Es ist geht um die Praxis und das Verständnis. Nicht darum eine Prüfung zu bestehen. Weitere Bücher aus der Reihe ergänzen das Wissen.

Excellent book. Much better than the similar books in the American Sailing Association and US Sailing textbooks. This is more focused on skills the crew needs to know rather than learning to sail. So if you want to get spots crewing on someone else’s boat, this is the book for you.
