The Only One To Have
Many, many years ago I joined my first ship as a marine engineering cadet. At that point I was introduced to the adjustable spanner known by all British marine engineers as a 'shifter.' We all carry one around in our back pockets as a matter of routine so you can nip up a seal or valve on rounds. They are also used as hammers, general purpose levers and measuring tools. Believe me when you have to climb up 40m of ladders back to a workshop when it's 50 deg C or more means you will try anything first. And there is one 'Shifter that Rules Them All.' The Bahco. The Holy Grail of shifters and the only one that means anything to a marine engineer. Put out any other manufacturer including Snap-On (overrated gear) and the one picked up will be Bahco. Anything else suggests amateur or novice engineering officer. And the reason is simple. These are the best available. The highest quality and feel the best in hand. They take utter abuse - and no-one abuses tools like shipboard engineers who think nothing of using a six foot pipe on the end of a spanner if it means avoiding drowning or being par boiled by steam. Other high end brands fall by the wayside for a variety of reasons. Snap-On because they jam up after a while of being used, others because the jaw profile makes them hard to use and yet more end up worn out quickly. Bahco keeps on being usable with an easy to operate worm adjuster that nicely balances free movement with enough accuracy to prevent the jaws from moving. The jaws are hard enough to not lose their profile but don't break when a bear with a sledge hammer gives it a love tap to get things moving. The only issue with the normal Bahco shifter is the jaws which never quite open wide enough. They do open wider than the competition but enough is never enough and that has been addressed by Bahco on this style or range of shifter. You can open up the jaws to a ridiculous amount that makes this ideal for use on pipes such as that on reefer systems or AC's.And if that's not enough the jaws have a set of marks that mean you know what size of proper spanner to go and get if you need to apply some real torque. The only problem there on a ship though, is that you get to the workshop, look at the tool board and 99 times out of a hundred you will see a gap where the 13mm, 17mm, 19mm and 24mm spanners should hang......Anyway, bottom line is that there is only one make of shifter that is acceptable and that is made by Bahco. Anything else is simply a rubbish copy.

Expensive but handy
Expensive.Handy.Opens wide.Narrower jaws allow to get grip where it is not possible with a standard wrench.Shorter handle makes it harder to overtighten compression fittings and allows better access.A decent tool with a modest look.

The best spanner for the size
I’ve seen lots of operatives using Bahco adjustable spanners. So I decided to pick one up, this is perfect for 15 mm and 22 mm fittings. Make sure you buy the one which is the wide jaw variant. It adjusts very nicely and is very comfortable to use. however, there is some play on the movable jaw.

Best brand you can get
Bacho adjustable spanners are the best value for money you will ever get. I've had mine for months now and it is still working perfectly just like the first day I used it. I was surprised how wide the jaws opened for such a small spanner.
