Q: Torn between 85mm F/1.8 vs 70-200 F/4. I know it's apples to oranges - but any thoughts?

On a 36mp camera, the 85 in insanely sharp on a support with flash in a studio, I personally wouldn't touch any lens now without image stabilisation, I just sold my 85mm f1.8 and am keeping my 70-200 f4, I know the 85 is probably technically sharper but I'm the sort of person to use a support (monopod) and pixel peep at 100%, I'm going to have a higher sharpness hit rate with the 70-200. Of course you lose the wider aperture to blur out the background quite as much, don't know how important that is to you

Q: What warranty comes with the lens?Is this a UK warranty?

The lens most certainly does NOT come with a 3 year warranty. In the UK Nikon bodies come with 2 years and lenses only 1 year warranty.

Q: Aperture f4 vs f2.8... how do people find this lens indoors and in low light? Can VR/ISO compensate for the lack of speed?

Can't help re shooting indoors. For general shooting hand held the f4 is lighter and therefore easier to use. The VR will compensate easily for the difference in aperture. The difference in quality between the f2.8 lens and the f4 lens is difficult to notice.

Yes absolutely but remember the 1.6x crop effect as you've chosen DX sensor over FX full frame, it will act like a 112x320mm would on an old 35mm camera. Great for wildlife/sport/surveilance perhaps this is your intention
