Young Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) wins one of the coveted 'Golden Tickets' from a Wonka Bar that allows its holder to take a trip around the eccentric Willy Wonka's (Gene Wilder) Chocolate Factory. Charlie and the rest of the winners find themselves in a magical world of chocolate rivers, Oompa Loompas, everlasting gobstoppers, lickable wall-paper, golden egg-laying geese and chilling tales to warn children not to misbehave. Roald Dahl wrote the screenplay from his own book. Review: Pure Imagination - Released in 1971, I first saw this film in 1978 on television - when I was eight or nine – and absolutely loved it! Loved it so much, in fact, that immediately after viewing it, my brother, two friends and I, strolled round the streets singing the 'Oompa Loompa' song as loudly as possible. Ahem! With that little anecdote out of the way, does it still hold up as one of the greatest children's films of all time? Of course it does! It was made at a time when they knew how to make films that the whole family could enjoy, with a strong moral centre and important life lessons for the children watching. It has some wonderful songs, including the aforementioned 'Oompa Loompa' and the sublime 'Pure Imagination' – courtesy of songwriters Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse – colourful characters, and strong performances from all concerned; especially Gene Wilder as the mercurial Willy Wonka, and Julie Dawn Cole as the wonderfully awful Veruca Salt. (Thank Roald Dahl, who provided the rich source material.) As well as the film, the blu-ray has several extras, including a making of documentary from around 2001. So, if you have children, you owe it to them to buy this. You won't regret it. Review: A classic 'golden ticket' film with a great message to adults and childrenn alike - Written by Raoul Dahl, with music by Anthony Newley, and filled with suprises galore, this children's classic is vividly brought to life by the incomparable Gene Wilder who plays Willie Wonka. We meet Charlie and his lazy good-for-nothing family and a whole host of parents who have reared the most obnoxious children imaginable who are invited to a tour of a chocolate factory (filmed in the Tobler factory in Switzerland) and to be given a lifetime supply of chocolate IF they win one of five 'golden tickets' hidden in five 'Wonka' bars. The film is full of twists and turns - as the winners embark on their weird, dark, sinsiter tour - filled with lots of philosophical statements on the way. What happens to the 'winners'? You will just have to watch this fabulous classic to find out.As to the cinematography - its magical. Be warned - you will come away with a different outlook on life as you enter and leave a 'world of sweet imagination'.

Made me hungry
I bought this film on a bit of a whim, I loved it as a child (even though it wasn't actually aimed at children) and have occasionally caught parts of it on TV. I was intrigued to see the whole movie again and to see how it looked in all its HD glory. I have to say I wasn't disappointed! The quality of the transfer is really very good, especially since the original started life almost 40 years ago! The picture is detailed and the colours so bright I was almost reaching for the remote to calm them! The main chocolate room though...phew...made me hungry looking at it! To cap it off, the sound was spot-on, detailed and engaging, revitalising the old songs. I know I've spoken a lot about the presentation, but most know the film itself and may be more interested to decide if they ahould spend the extra 5 or 6 pounds on the blu-ray... YES do, buy it!
