Are the usb ports internally isolated, this will not work on a head unit if they are connected via ground and hot.

Not certain what you mean by "internally isolated" but I would say yes. I have the two ports connected to two female port connectors on a new Sony XAV-AX5500 head unit. The hot and ground are supplied to the ports by the head unit. Both ports are functioning.

Does this snap into place or screw into place?

This gets screwed into place with the nut on the backside.
