Great for anyone wanting to make paddles. I am a paddle maker, I bought this to see what other people did. Honestly, I didn't learn much from it as if I was going to write a book on paddle I would do it very similar to this one. I am a professional carpenter and joiner and have all the tools. So if you follow this you will do ok. If I had one complaint as a European, It would be helpful to have had the designs in metric as well as imperial. However, it is fun translating them. The measurements are in inches and 1/32. This takes a little getting your head around as it will look something like this: 2 3/32 which is 2" and 3/32.

Gotinterested in canoing through the kids doing it.Many years ago made canoes and kayaks at school found it very interesting when you made and used your own.I was fedup using club equipment wanted a paddle that was personal well balanced the correct size for me.I bought the book spent time deciding on which one to make and made a Voyager that worked verywell. My young son (13) is now making one now to his measurements he didn't realise how easy it is to make if you take your time and work with the wood.The hardest part is deciding which one to make first and finding the correct wood which is part of the fun.I will be making a collection of paddles in the near future due to reading this book and having the satisfaction of using a paddle you have made yourself.I am not very experienced at working with wood just the usual DIY and this book made it so easy.Highly recommended if you want that bit extra out of canoing.

Fantastic book!If you want to carve your own paddles or even if you just want a fun read about them, it's a great book.Inspired me to making my own paddles and carving my own yokes and rebuilding my own wooden canoe components. I now own a used vintage cedar strip canoe that needs TLC and I have no doubts on able to restore it to fully useable now.
