It does shut off automatically unless you leave the lid open......guilty!

Are the markings on both sides? I'm left handed and want the markings facing me.

Yes. There is an identical 'window' with markings on both sides of the kettle and also some useful markers inside the kettle to enabe you to judge quantities too small to show in the windows. An excellent kettle. Thoroughly recommended.

Is there a light either in the on-off switch or in the fill level "window" to indicate that it is switched on please?
