Tascam US-16x08 – USB Audio/MIDI Interface (16 in/8 out)

This is the Tascam upgrade to their previous 16-in 8-out. It has a great in-built driver which allows the unit to function as a standalone digital mixing desk when connected to your PC. You can add effects on each channel at the same time - a major step up from the previous models - courtesy of an on-board mixing processor most usefully compression and reverb. Not plugged into a computer it behaves as a preamp on the eight mic XLR inputs.However, what is even more interesting is if you have a DAW on the same PC. The driver passes through the channels unmixed so you can mix live/record using the DAW. This again differs from my other TASCAM unit. However, the driver display is still useful as it shows the pre-fade level so you can prevent the clipping before it happens.I am still learning how to use this - in particular, outputting a channel to the Master and another output sub-mix whilst using a DAW (groups for those of us who can remember analogue desks!), the DAW seems to want one or the other. It looks like it should work as the driver panel has a checkbox that says 'Route to Stereo bus also' but just where the stereo bus is when you are running the DAW seems puzzling (I would have thought Master L/R!).Audio performance is great, just about all the record errors I was getting with my earlier Tascam on the same PC have gone.The power supply could do with being integrated, it is really shallow as a unit which means once you rackmount it in a 2U cabinet with another unit, it is fiddly to reach the power supply socket.

Exactly what I needed to expand my home studio.

Excellent device, and once you work out the software that comes with it, even better. You can record on a PC and monitor directly, meaning no latency issues. Has inbuilt compressor and eq as well as levels, so you can do a monitor mix as well as a recording mix with your DAW. A great piece of gear for little money.

This seemed like a good buy until I tried to install the software on my iMac running OS Mojave. The settings panel would not install.The most disappointing aspect of the process was the lack of help from Tascam support (which seems to be a one man job by the name of Jo F). This rep simply stated that there were no problems with setting panel software, when in my case there clearly was. The solution given was "send it back".He offered no other solution than what was written in the manual and simply sent a short email that stated if it doesn't work then send it back. A real "can't be bothered" attitude that ensures Tascam will be at the bottom of the list when I investigate my next purchase.The hardware worked fine, however the dedicated settings panel software would not install on my Mac.The item has been returned and I am now awaiting my Focusrite who apparently provide support if a problem arises.

Great Interface, I've had one for years. Bought a second one to use in a live rig for my band.
