No it does not stops playing when you shut the lid. When it winds down it stops. You have to wind it each time you want to listen to it. I want to tell you, this piece is beautiful. I bought this for a special needs child for Christmas and it is nicer than I ever thought. Shes had so many people tell her how pretty it is. I wouldnt mind getting one for myself!!! Worth the money.
