what was the powder used for? (provided in the package)

The problem is that it falls straight through onto the carpet beneath. There is no instructions about how much to use so I tipped it all on - mistake! I thi k a pinch at a time would probably save having to sweep it off the carpet. It is a pity it doesn't have a backing to prevent this.
