Review: The perfect book for textile artists - Just a beautiful book, lots of inspiration, images are excellent. Heavy in weight so not a bed time read. A pleasure to have - never letting go of this one! Review: Textiles: The Art of Mankind - A splendid book, well-researched and beautifully illustrated. Something to treasure....and to dip into, not really to read in one sitting. The project is ambitious - examining the history of textiles from the earliest times up to the present. Some of the discussion is about whether textiles count as 'art' or 'craft' - a dilemma that will probably never be fully resolved. The illustrations depict textiles from all over the world, from all periods of history, and the text examines mutual developments, and the influence of cultures on each other. It discusses various types of fibre and how they are used...silk, wool, linen, synthetic fibres and so on.

Lovely but weights a ton!
This is no light reading, entirely due to the actual weight of the book. Otherwise it looks incredibly luxurious and it’s an amazing choice for a present (if they can carry it!)

Textiles
A book suitable for just browsing or for the craftsperson a source of inspiration. Keep it beside you - it is too heavy to carry far and just keep looking. If you don't want to read the text the photographs tell you all you could wish to know. I highly recommend it.

Let't get it out of the way first.......I don't "get" the choice of artwork for the cover. I was in a toney NYC book store and saw this book, all awash in shrink wrap, and I "assumed" that it was about the history of textiles. The choice of cover artwork, a very lovely-but-traditional print, lead me to think that this was yet-another door stop book about textile design through the ages. Luckily, I happened to encounter the book elsewhere and flipped through. Key word: "flipped"! I knew this was something that would be amazingly inspiring, for years to come. So, I am very happy with my Amazon purchase of this book. It is lavish, surprising, informative, motivational, distinctive, and beautifully presented. I think the preponderance of ethnic textiles, plus vital contemporary examples is SO at odds with the cover....Well, a small quibble. A beautiful, inspiring book. Try it!

Beautifully photographed, well written, inspirational book by Mary Schoeser. A book that spans the history of textiles as well as recognising the wonderful work that is being created today.
