Quick and simple. Excellent value.
Good condition. On my daughter's Win 8 machine it worked Plug 'n play straight away. Don't forget to put the power cable in first, then the data cable. So far only used for loading CDs onto iTunes and it blasted through that at the rate of 1 CD every 2 minutes. Very quiet too. Instructions seem a little "translated from Chinese" but they make perfect sense and to summarise they just say "insert cables; insert disc; proceed". If you need a piece of kit like this, get THIS piece of kit.

Perfect solution!
After two years the CD drive on my Sony Vaio laptop had packed in. After looking on Amazon and reading the positive reviews, this seemed to be the ideal solution: cheaper than getting a replacement CD drive for the Sony and also paying for the repair. It arrived within two days, just plugged it into the USB port and it worked first time. It's neatly designed, light and is about the size of a double CD case; also very quiet in operation. Perfect: job sorted!

Great product, shame about the instruction manual.
I wanted to be able to record movies from my home TV and play them back on my netbook in my campervan and this product enables me to do that perfectly. However, it is such a shame that the instruction manual is by no means 'idiot-proof' for an elderly technophobe like myself. After spending over 2 hours trying to connect the drive to my netbook I finally realised that what I thought was the 'connection' (don't know if this is the correct name for it)cable was, in fact, the separate power lead, which might or might not be needed. Once I had sussed this out (the manual not being at all explicit in this respect), I plugged in the correct cable and connected instantly. Such a shame about the wasted 2 hours, which resulted in a downgrade of my score from 5 to 4 stars, because the product is brilliant and does exactly what the manufacturer claims.

External DVD / CD Drive
Hi,Just wanted to say this is the best £20 i have spent in a long time. I managed to get a virus on my laptop after getting the 'Met Police' warning about my computor being locked as its activity was illegal and asked me to pay a large sum of money. Of course i didn't but i followed instructions on how to delete this and things got really bad. As my laptop doesn't have a dvd drive i was 'stuck'. So after a little research i bought this great little item from Amazon and received it very quickly (As Usual) i bought a recovery to factory settings cd, and hey presto, followed the instructions and within 10 - 15 mins my laptop was up and running and better than it was. I have used this external cd drive several times now, installing my Microsoft Word, and other programmes back into my laptop and its just 'BRILLIANT' So Thank You Amazon, such a fantastic price and it did exactly as it said it would. I would definately recommend this item as a must to anyone who has a laptop with no dvd / cd drive, well worth the money and saved a fortune on having to take it to a shop. EXCELLENT.

Great drive, had it working seconds after unpacking
Just got this as the drive in my old Windows XP Laptop has died. I plugged it in with nothing further to do, read several discs without hesitation.I haven’t tried to burn a CD yet, but probably never will. I only wanted a reader.Well packaged with both cables and minimal instructions, just two small pages. But as I mentioned above, plug’n’play worked perfectly. The construction looks good so I’m very happy with it.

You get what you pay for
I replaced this because my last one stopped working properly after a couple of years. We now buy computers without DVD/CD ports, necessitating the purchase of separate drives. This was about half the price of my previous one. This is obviously due to the fact that it is made as cheaply as possible and will probably not outlive any day-to-day abuse. So like all products nowadays, it does not appear to be made to last. Apart from that, it works perfectly and is a good replacement for my previous one for the price.

Fraudulent seller. Not new - drive is 11 years old
This product is not as advertised and I would not recommend purchasing it. I bought this to replace an old one (from a different vendor), which was bought in 2014 and had stopped working. I opened up the old one to have a look at it, and found the dvd drive within the case was a Hitachi dvd drive from 2005.After finding this out, I thought I'd check this "new" one - almost exactly the same. This time it is a dvd drive from a HP laptop, once again from 2005.Please see the pictures attached for proof of the drive's model and age.In terms of its functionality - well, under the hood it's a HP branded dvd drive from 2005, and is currently working fine. It can read cds and dvds, and should (though I haven't tested it) be cable of writing to cds, but not dvds. The drive is already 11 years old, so clearly it's very durable - but after so long you would expect it to die at any moment. Other reviews suggest that for many people it was damaged on arrival or died within weeks. Though if you're lucky and you get a dvd drive that wasn't used too heavily in the laptop it was no doubt stolen from, you could maybe get a few years of use out of this. While it appears completely functional, I am giving this 1 star on the basis that the product description clearly states that is features "100% new High-quality products", and cost me £13. For £2.09 you can by this product USB 2.0 to 7+6 13Pin Slimline SATA Laptop CD/DVD Rom Optical Drive Adapter Cable--Black which will give the exact same function, provided you have an old laptop with a dvd drive lying around and you're comfortable with removing the drive from the laptop (a very easy process - there will be one screw on the under-side of the laptop holding the dvd drive in place. Removing this screw will allow the drive to slide straight out. You may have to remove the bottom cover of the laptop which would require you to remove more screws). You could also purchase a used laptop dvd drive for ~£2 on ebay if you don't have an old laptop to harvest.I am in the process of contacting Amazon about this. Hopefully this will not be available to purchase on Amazon for long, but in the meantime - please do NOT purchase.
