Expensive but relative to the quality, functionality and appearance of cheaper bins, worth it
I had my old plastic roll top bin for decades. One day I wondered why I continued to put up with its small capacity, its ugliness, and a lid that had a viscious mind of its own. I wash shocked at how expensive bins had become but decided to treat myself to one that seemed to be just the ticket for about £50. Luckily I saw it in real life and new its plastic flimsiness would soon disappoint. The shop had a small SimpleHuman bin on display as well and I knew I had to have its 40 litre big brother. It is a thing of beauty and very practical. It is sturdy, goes flat against the wall and the lid opens near enough to 90 degrees making it easy to fill. The fact that the lid stays open until you close it I find very useful. I had no trouble using my cheap bin liners. Taking it out of the box and setting it up has not left any fingerprints. I never thought I would spend so much money on a kitchen bin. It has a 10 year guarantee. I think it was worth it for me.

High quality, designed thoughtfully - 40L Rectangular Touch-Bar Kitchen Bin
Well made, and lots of attention to detail. I am very happy with this bin. When I was choosing a bin, I asked myself several questions to make sure I was making the right decision, and this bin ticked all the boxes. One of my main concerns was the moving parts and how likely they were to break, how much maintenance they needed, and how much stress they put on the bag and the mechanism itself. The bin has two hinges where the lid attaches and a spring-loaded mechanism. The lid is held down by a clip attached to the "touch bar," and all of the moving parts do not touch the bin liner. The mechanisms are all well-built, and it's unlikely that the contents from the bin will get close to any important mechanisms. Therefore, I don't think the moving parts will break easily, and they don't put any stress on the bag or mechanism. All of the moving parts are contained in the lid piece, so it should be easy to replace if it does break. I was also concerned about whether the bin's interior was smooth enough to allow recycling items without using a bag. The inner bin insert is smooth and has no sharp edges, and I've been able to use it without a bag for clean recycling. However, you can still use a bag if you want to avoid the hassle of cleaning the inert every few weeks. Another concern was whether the bin itself was easy to clean. The external stainless steel finish is very easy to keep clean, and any stains or scratches can be easily fixed. The bin's bag holder is easy to remove, and there are no sharp or angled edges that could damage the bag. There are also air gaps in the internal space to allow for easy bag insertion and removal, and the ledge in the insert makes it convenient to prop up the inner bin to remove and replace the bag. I also wanted to make sure there were no "nooks and crannies" that would be hard to clean, and thankfully, all areas that will need regular cleaning are easily accessible. The lid fits very securely, and no odours have escaped. There are no extra gimmick features like carbon filters or UV light, but the tight-fitting lid is enough for me. The bin also has an embedded handle on the back, which makes it easy to move around, and the touch bar is very easy to clean, so I don't think it will get gross over time. Overall, I highly recommend the simplehuman CW2014 40L Rectangular Touch-Bar Kitchen Bin. It's well-built, easy to use, and easy to clean.

Excellent and good looking bin. Built to last as sooo heavy. Bit pricey but worth it.

Great bin (never thought I would review a bin!)
This has been our kitchen bin for nearly 5 years and I’ve been meaning to write a review for ages. It’s a great bin - there are some really nice design features, including that the lever to open the lid is on the top and works really well. The inner bin part is really well designed too, to make changing the bin liner easy. The oblong shape is more practical than a round bin. It’s looking good still. A great quality bin - worth the outlay!

Magnificent but flawed
I love my new bin - it's tall and thin and looks beautiful in my kitchen - the out-of-the-ordinary shape adds to the je ne sais quoi. The lid is tactile - it's easy to open and really doesn't leave fingerprints. I prefer to manually open a bin rather than wave my hand in it's direction. It's not soft-close but I knew this when I bought it - you click it shut. If you're looking for an up-to -the-minute bin, then this wouldn't be for you for that reason. There are holes at the bottom so the inner plastic bin doesn't create a vacuum and trap the bag when you're emptying. There's a rectangular hole at the back of the outer metal bin so you can lift it (rather awkwardly if it's full, one handle isn't enough) but you can't see it. I went for the 40L - if there had been a 50L I think I would have gone for that. Otherwise, it's perfect. £120 for a bin is ridiculous though but it is lovely (£140 on SimpleHuman site). £5.99 for bin liners - what's that all about? I hope they're bio-degradable - I've just checked, apparently they're not. You get some free samples to tempt you (I don't think so) but you can use normal (bd) bin liners without them showing. There's a 10 year guarantee - that's great. I've registered my bin on the SimpleHuman website in case the lid breaks but I have high hopes, you don't give 10 years if you're not confident it will last.

HIghest recommendation for this touch bar trash can. It's a superior design to the foot pedal can. A pedal can requires mechanical linkage from the pedal to the lid, and this linkage has to make two right-angle turns at back and top. The joints of the linkage take tremendous force, because the pedal has only a short movement to cause a larger movement at the lid, and there are two right-angle turns the linkage has to make in between. What this adds up to is noise in the mechanical parts as they creak under the strain, and broken parts--the Oxo that this one replaced had plastic pieces in the linkage that just broke after a time, because they couldn't take the load. And it was a $100 can at the time I bought it. By eliminating all the connecting rods and joints leading from the pedal to the lid, you eliminate noise and broken parts. Another thing you need to know about this one, is that the touch bar does work. It's not tricky, you don't have to develop a touch--it works right away. Took me about 5 uses to get used to pushing down rather than lifting up--now it's like I always did it that way. Lots of times, when I'm at the sink or counter my fingers are sticky or wet and I don't want to touch the bar with them--I just hit it with the heel of my hand or wrist or whatever. It's actually more convenient than the pedal, in that your feet can stay wherever they are. Separate the can in your mind from the Simplehuman custom bags. You don't need the bags, and I actually prefer to use the 13-gallon Glad Force flex bags I've been using. When you buy the can, Simplehuman packs 10 bags with it, so you can try them out for yourself and see what you think. I find the Simplehuman bags a little tight--they make them that way so there's a tight fit around the top. But the Simplehuman bags are solving a problem that's not there in the first place. When I put the 13-gal Glad flex bag in, I just gather up the inch or two of extra until there's a good fit around the top of the liner, and then push the gathered 'extra' through a little hole that's in the back of the lift-out liner--you push it through the hole from the outside to the inside, and it ends up out of sight, out of mind. If anything, it's a little less annoying than stretching the Simplehuman custom bag over the liner, although neither present a problem. People are correct to raise questions about the bags, but truly, you can use whatever bag you want to use. The size differences--8.5 gal can versus 13 gal bag in my case--are meaningless. You don't end up with a sloppy fit, because it's easy to make gathers and tuck them out of sight. One reason I prefer to keep using the 13 gal Glad bags is that I can put extra stuff into the bag when I pull it out if I want--like refrigerator leftovers that need to go away. There's just no downside. It's logical that Simplehuman would want to sell custom bags, but pay no attention to the hype, you don't need them, or even want them. This can looks good. The coating they put on it does work. It resists prints and smudges--wipes clean immediately. And the touch bar lid is a vast improvement over the pedal. Edit: P. S.--To the reviewer who said his has a handgrip in front: The hand grip goes in back. Just lift off the top, turn the lower can so that the grip faces to the rear, and replace the top. Done.
