great book, easy to read and fun
Great book, most say to read it before lord of the rings but I read it after, its definitely different to lord of the rings, with lord of the rings there is a lot more description, you may have a page/paragraph just describing the scenery or the feelings of a certain character whilst with the hobbit it is a lot more condensed and much quicker, although that being said a lot easier to read and ends up giving every reader a slightly different experience due to there imagination.Overall great book even for adults, I can see how this book turned into 3 films instead of just the 1, although the book is like 1/5 to 2/5 the size of lord of the rings as i said due to there being so much being left to interpretation it can be expanded on very well.Examples of this include (without spoilers), whenever there is a sudden attack or event in which it is described in as little as a paragraph but in actual events would cover 5,10,15 minutes of acting in a movie or how you would imagine the event to occur. Other examples include things like where it says in the book "and you know how it goes" or "they carried on with more stories for hours" and those sort of lines give you a real chance of imagining more then what the book says.

Simple story, difficult language
This book has been reviewed enough times by more perceptive people than me so I won't try myself. One thing perhaps noting is the mismatch between the simplicity of the story and the elaborateness of the language. I remember this from my childhood and decided I would read it to my 7 year old daughter. The story is a simple linear adventure with simple characters, no sex and no brutal violence, so very appropriate for a 7 year old (the 4 year old listened in from time to time but it was well beyond her). However, the style of language was much more difficult. I regularly found myself having to reread sentences to work out what was being said and to get the emphases right to bring out the correct meaning. Sentences are regularly inverted (presumably to achieve a medieval effect) and there is a heavy use of metaphor. It took me a while to realise just how little my daughter was understanding and how much I had to explain to her. She frequently seemed bored, although less so as I got better and knowing where to stop and discuss. On the plus side, she ultimately enjoyed the story. Furthermore, it is a much more fruitful text to discuss in terms of author's intentions, narrative techniques and character development than the reading books she brings home from school. In short, the difficulty of the language is not consistent with the difficulty of the story. Had I known this at the outset, I probably wouldn't have started, which is a shame because my daughter enjoyed it in the end.
